Newcastle United Seeks Top Performance Against Arsenal In EFL Cup Semi-Final Clash

Eddie Howe stresses the importance of Newcastle United's best performance against Arsenal in the EFL Cup semi-final. With recent successes and key players like Alexander Isak, they aim to secure a spot in the final.

Eddie Howe is aware of the high stakes for Newcastle United as they face Arsenal in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final. The Magpies aim to reach the final for the second time in three years and end a 70-year wait for a trophy. This marks their third appearance in an EFL Cup semi-final, having reached the final in their previous two attempts.

Newcastle has been on an impressive run, winning their last six matches across all competitions. Their victories include triumphs over Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Spurs. Howe emphasises that only their best performance will suffice against Arsenal. "This is an important game for us. We need to be at our absolute best," he stated.

Newcastle Aims for Victory Against Arsenal

Striker Alexander Isak has been pivotal in Newcastle's recent success, scoring in seven of his last eight games. His goal against Arsenal at St James' Park in November was crucial, and he aims to replicate Laurent Robert's feat from 2001-02 by scoring against them twice in one season.

Howe praised Isak's form: "He will naturally feel like scoring when you are on a run of goalscoring games that he is." He added that the team is creating opportunities for Isak, who is finishing them off effectively.

Anthony Gordon's fitness remains a concern after he suffered a facial injury during the match against Spurs. Despite this setback, Howe hopes Gordon will be ready for the Arsenal clash. "Anthony was in a bit of discomfort...but performed really well for us," Howe remarked.

The manager expressed his belief that Gordon's injury should have resulted in a penalty: "Looking back at the decision, I thought it was a foul, I thought it was a clear penalty." Despite this incident, Gordon continued to play well after being treated.

Howe stressed the importance of maintaining recent good performances to secure victory against Arsenal. He noted that they must be solid defensively while also posing problems for their opponents. "We just need to get that mix right," Howe concluded.
