Newcastle United Seeks Quick Response Against Southampton To Sustain Champions League Aspirations

Eddie Howe calls on Newcastle United to recover from a recent defeat as they prepare to face Southampton. The team aims to keep their Champions League hopes alive with a strong performance.

Eddie Howe has called on his Newcastle United squad to bounce back swiftly after their heavy defeat to Bournemouth. The team suffered a 4-1 loss, with Justin Kluivert scoring a hat-trick and Milos Kerkez adding a late goal. This marked Newcastle's first defeat in nine matches across all competitions. Howe is determined to regain form against Southampton to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Newcastle's recent setback saw them drop to sixth place in the standings, trailing the top four by two points. Howe acknowledged that the team was not at its best, both technically and physically, during the match against Bournemouth. "We were not at our best, there is no doubt about it," Howe admitted. He noted that fatigue might have played a role in their performance.

Newcastle United Aims for Quick Response vs Southampton

Southampton's Premier League struggles persisted as they lost 3-2 to Nottingham Forest. Despite a promising display under Ivan Juric, they found themselves three goals down at halftime. Jan Bednarek and Paul Onuachu scored for Southampton, but it wasn't enough to secure a win. Captain Bednarek remains optimistic about future victories at major stadiums.

Reflecting on their recent performances, Bednarek commented on the contrasting halves against Nottingham Forest: "Completely opposite halves. The first one was really bad, and the second was really good." He emphasized the need for quick learning and increased intensity in their play.

For Southampton, Paul Onuachu made an impact despite coming on as a substitute against Forest. He scored his first Premier League goal after 23 attempts and had more shots than any of his teammates during the match. Meanwhile, Newcastle's Alexander Isak has been in excellent form, scoring in each of his last four away games.

Isak has also excelled against promoted teams, netting 13 goals in just 12 appearances against them. His recent hat-trick against Ipswich Town highlights his ability to perform consistently well in such encounters.

Match Prediction: Newcastle Win

Newcastle have been dominant against promoted sides, losing only once in their last 23 Premier League games against them. Since that defeat at Luton Town in December 2023, they have scored four or more goals in five of their six matches against promoted clubs.

The Magpies have also won their last three away games in the league and are aiming for a fourth consecutive away victory for the first time since 1996. Their recent record at St. Mary's is strong, having won three of their last four visits there.

Southampton's Challenging Season

Southampton have struggled significantly this season, winning just one of their last 13 Premier League games against Newcastle and losing each of the last four encounters with them. They have also secured only one victory in their previous 35 league matches overall.

The Saints' current tally of six points from 22 top-flight games is among the lowest historically when converting to three points per win. Additionally, Southampton players have committed 17 errors leading to goals this season.

The Opta win probability suggests a strong chance for Newcastle with a 63.3% likelihood of victory compared to Southampton's 16.5%. A draw stands at 20.2%, indicating Newcastle's favourable position going into this match.
