Eddie Howe Urges Caution In Decision On Anthony Gordon's Fitness For Upcoming Matches

Eddie Howe is optimistic about Anthony Gordon's fitness following a groin injury. With no serious damage found, he must decide on Gordon's participation against Chelsea while considering the upcoming match against Arsenal.

Eddie Howe has indicated that Anthony Gordon might play for Newcastle United in their EFL Cup match against Chelsea on Wednesday. Gordon was absent from the recent game at Stamford Bridge due to a groin injury sustained before the match. A scan showed no serious damage, and Howe is optimistic about his recovery. However, they will decide carefully about his participation, considering the upcoming Premier League clash with Arsenal.

Newcastle felt Gordon's absence in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea. Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, while Alexander Isak netted Newcastle's only goal. Howe emphasised the importance of making the right decision regarding Gordon's involvement against Chelsea, especially with Arsenal looming on Saturday. "We have to make sure we don't do any damage," Howe stated.

Howe Discusses Gordon's Fitness for Newcastle

Gordon has been crucial for Newcastle this season, creating more chances than any other player in the team with 18 opportunities. Only Bruno Guimaraes has completed more dribbles than Gordon, who has 13 successful attempts. This highlights his significance in Newcastle's attacking play.

Howe also acknowledged Cole Palmer's impact for Chelsea. Palmer continued his impressive form by contributing significantly to Chelsea's victory over Newcastle. He has been involved in 12 goals this season, scoring seven and assisting five times. Against Newcastle alone, he has two goals and one assist in five appearances across all competitions.

Howe noted Palmer's ability to exploit transitions effectively, which led to both of Chelsea’s goals against Newcastle. "We didn't do enough to stop him," Howe admitted. He stressed the need for better defensive strategies when facing Palmer again at Stamford Bridge.

Strategic Adjustments for Upcoming Matches

Reflecting on the match against Chelsea, Howe mentioned that despite conceding a second goal, their defence improved during the last hour of play. The team aims to enhance their collective performance and learn from past mistakes as they prepare for future encounters.

As Newcastle gears up for their next matches against Chelsea and Arsenal, careful consideration of player fitness and strategic adjustments will be crucial in achieving positive results.
