Eddie Howe praised Newcastle United's display as their finest of the season after a thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool at St James' Park. Fabian Schar's last-minute goal secured a point for Newcastle, who had twice led before Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead in the 83rd minute. Schar's equaliser ensured a share of the spoils.
Newcastle ended the match with a higher expected goals (xG) total than Liverpool, recording 1.72 xG compared to Liverpool's 1.44. This performance left Howe feeling optimistic about his team, who have struggled this season and are currently 10th in the Premier League standings.

"I feel positive. I feel really positive," Howe expressed to Amazon Prime. He highlighted the team's improved performance, especially in the first half, and acknowledged the challenge posed by Liverpool's quality substitutes like Trent Alexander-Arnold. "Our mental quality came to the fore, and we got the equaliser," he added.
Newcastle had opportunities to extend their lead to 2-0 and managed to score three goals overall. They played with energy and quality, which made Howe proud of his team's effort against a formidable opponent like Liverpool.
Alexander Isak was instrumental in Newcastle's performance, scoring their opening goal and assisting Anthony Gordon for their second in the 62nd minute. Despite an inconsistent start to the season, Isak now leads the club with five Premier League goals.
Isak became only the third Newcastle player to score in each of his first two league appearances against league leaders, following David Edgar in 2008 and Andy Cole in 1993. Howe praised Isak's contribution, stating: "I thought that was his best performance of the season."
Howe emphasised that moments of brilliance like Isak's can change games significantly. "Isak was really good tonight," he said, adding that if all players perform well, Newcastle can be a formidable team.
The game plan was to maintain their identity despite facing a strong team like Liverpool. This balance proved challenging but rewarding as they matched their opponents effectively throughout the match.
