Newcastle United Secure Rare Away Win At Burnley, Howe Praises Team's Resolve

Newcastle United finally ended their winless Premier League spell with a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, moving into 10th place. Early goals from Joelinton and Yoane Wissa, followed by a late Bruno Guimaraes strike, secured only Newcastle United’s second away league success of the season after three matches without a win.

Burnley slipped further into trouble after a 10th straight Premier League game without success left Scott Parker’s team six points short of safety. Josh Laurent’s volley gave Burnley belief after falling two behind, while Marcus Edwards led a strong response but could not prevent another defeat in a tense and open contest.

Newcastle United’s early intensity shaped the match. Joelinton marked a 200th Premier League appearance with a composed finish after only 65 seconds. Five minutes later, Wissa struck on his first Premier League start for Newcastle United, putting the visitors 2-0 up before Burnley settled and turning the home crowd restless.

Burnley almost changed the momentum before half-time. Edwards seemed certain to equalise at 2-1, only for Fabian Schar to clear off the line. After the break, Laurent went close again when a powerful effort hit the crossbar, while Edwards kept testing Newcastle United’s back line but found no breakthrough.

Eddie Howe focused on attitude rather than style after the match, stressing the importance of simply taking three points. "A massive win for us. I don’t think it really matters tonight so much in terms of how we did it, we just needed to do it," Howe said, reflecting on a difficult away spell.

Howe underlined the response from Newcastle United’s squad during a pressure match, praising the way the team handled periods of Burnley pressure. "It was a really strong start from us, in recognition of how important the game was for us. I can’t praise the players enough for how we battled through it. It was never going to be easy tonight," Howe added.

The head coach also highlighted the importance of the second half, as Burnley pressed for an equaliser. "That second half was a massive 45 minutes for us. We needed to get over the line and put credit to the players for how they saw the game out and the character of the group," Howe said, stressing Newcastle United’s resolve.

Newcastle United still face defensive concerns despite the three points. The team has now conceded in 12 successive Premier League matches, which is Newcastle United’s longest run of league games without a clean sheet under a single manager since 2007. That run shows the balance Howe must find between attacking threat and defensive control.

Guimaraes eased those nerves in stoppage time, scoring in the third minute of added time in the second half to settle the match at 3-1. The goal ended Burnley’s late push and ensured Newcastle United’s strong beginning did not go to waste, despite the chances conceded across both halves.

Howe’s team selection changes played a major role. Nick Woltemade made way for Wissa, while Jacob Murphy dropped out for Harvey Barnes, who was heavily involved in Newcastle United’s second goal. Those attacking changes delivered more direct threat and extra pace, particularly in the first half when Newcastle United seized control.

Wissa became the 25th player to score on a first Premier League start for Newcastle United, yet the DR Congo forward focused on the wider team effort. "We needed this win, especially away from home. I’m really pleased with the win tonight," Wissa told Sky Sports when asked about the result and Newcastle United’s away form.

Wissa detailed Newcastle United’s recent issues on the road and highlighted the defensive display. "Away from home, there’s been a lack of confidence, a lack of wins. We’ve just seen how hard it is. It’s a top performance, especially defensively. I think Burnley played a top game so give credit to them. We’ve shown the character and mentality to win," Wissa added.

From Burnley’s side, Edwards stressed frustration at missed opportunities and a poor start despite a strong overall performance. "The first 10 minutes cost us the game. We can be happy with the number of chances we created, but at this level you have got to finish them," Edwards told Sky Sports after another difficult Premier League outing.

Edwards also reflected personally on the defeat and Burnley’s league position. "We’re disappointed with that, we’re disappointed not to come away with points. I thought I could have scored, so I’m not too happy right now. We’re always going to feel we’ve got a chance. We’re not the type of people to ever give up. We’re looking to put this behind us and looking to the next game and try and get three points."

The result leaves Newcastle United targeting further improvement away from home while addressing ongoing defensive leaks, despite moving into the Premier League’s top half. Burnley must recover quickly after another narrow loss, with Parker’s side creating enough chances yet still sitting six points off safety and facing a demanding run of fixtures.
