Eddie Howe Remains Newcastle United Boss As Club Defers Decision On Future

Newcastle United chiefs are standing by head coach Eddie Howe for now, with no immediate move planned despite a difficult campaign. Chief executive David Hopkinson says any firm decision on Howe’s future will be taken after the season, as the club balances recent struggles with previous progress under the current coaching staff.

Hopkinson stressed that internal discussions are centred on the final phase of the campaign rather than speculation. The club accepts the pressure created by results and the mood at St James’ Park, yet wants focus to remain on performances in the remaining fixtures before any long-term calls are made on leadership.

Howe remains Newcastle boss; future undecided

This season has tested Newcastle United and Eddie Howe in the Premier League, with the team currently 12th in the table. The tension was clear before the international break, when supporters booed the players after a 2-1 home loss to rivals Sunderland, a derby defeat that has weighed heavily within the club.

European hopes also suffered a heavy blow for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe in the Premier League campaign’s wider context. Newcastle were beaten 7-2 by Barcelona at Camp Nou in the Champions League last-16 second leg, having been considered unfortunate to draw 1-1 in the home leg after a strong performance at St James’ Park.

Despite the current frustration, Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have enjoyed notable Premier League-era highs under this regime. Howe guided the club to Champions League qualification in both 2022-23 and 2024-25, while also ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by beating Liverpool at Wembley Stadium to win the EFL Cup last March.

Expectations were therefore substantial for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe as this Premier League season began. Hopes stayed high even after the club-record sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool, because Newcastle spent around 240m on reinforcements. The incoming players included Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw, signalling a major investment in the squad.

Newcastle United and Eddie Howe Premier League finances and board stance

The board’s position on Newcastle United and Eddie Howe is also shaped by off-field growth linked to this Premier League era. Newcastle reported record revenues and a 44% rise in commercial income for the year ending June 2025, highlighting the club’s expanding financial base and the appeal built during recent seasons on Tyneside.

Even with those financial results, there is acceptance that performances have fallen short of targets for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe in the Premier League. However, Hopkinson voiced backing for the current head coach. "Eddie’s our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here, and we’ll talk about the future when it’s time," Hopkinson said as the club released their latest financial figures.

Hopkinson then clarified the club’s stance on Newcastle United and Eddie Howe in the Premier League run-in. "We are not looking to make a change at the moment. We are not having those conversations. We are still in the midst of the season. Right now, we are focused on the seven matches we have remaining and not distracting ourselves with speculation about what we may or may not do in the summer. I don’t have a stance on his future. What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt. We take it seriously. There’s nothing within us that thinks, ‘Well, it’s just three points and on we go’. It has resonated. I spent a couple of hours in a one-on-one lunch recently with Eddie, and we talked through a multitude of things, including that."

Newcastle United and Eddie Howe now look to the Premier League schedule, starting with Crystal Palace on April 12. Newcastle sit six points off the top six, leaving scope to rescue European ambitions. Club leaders plan to review the wider picture once those seven remaining matches are completed and the season’s final position is confirmed.
