Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe expressed his satisfaction with his team's impressive response in their 3-1 Premier League victory over Southampton. The Magpies had experienced a setback with a surprising 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, ending their six-game winning streak. Despite falling behind early to Jan Bednarek's header, Newcastle quickly turned the tide.
Alexander Isak played a crucial role by scoring twice before halftime, putting Newcastle ahead. His previous failure to score against Andoni Iraola's side at St. James' Park ended his consecutive goals record at eight league games. However, Isak regained his form, bringing Newcastle back into contention and reaching 17 league goals this season.

Sandro Tonali added a second-half goal to complete the comeback for Howe's team. This victory propelled them to fifth place in the Premier League standings. Howe emphasized the importance of resilience in achieving this result, especially after the disappointment against Bournemouth.
"It was a tough game, as we knew it would be," said Howe. "Southampton came out quickly and scored, so that changed the dynamic of the game. We needed to really dig deep; it was a big test of our character, especially after what happened last week [against Bournemouth]. We needed a big response, and we got that with the penalty, so we never looked back."
Howe praised Isak for his performance: "I'm so pleased for Isak [to score again]. He was the conduit for us in this game; he was the guy linking play and then on the end of bits and pieces. He took the second goal really well, and it was a great move from the team. I'm delighted with him, delighted for the group. It's a big win for us."
Next up for Newcastle is a home match against Fulham next weekend. They will then face Arsenal in an EFL Cup semi-final second leg at home, holding a 2-0 advantage as they aim for another final appearance in three years.
Southampton's struggles continued under Ivan Juric's leadership as they suffered their sixth consecutive Premier League loss. They remain at the bottom of the table with just six points and are ten points away from safety.
Juric acknowledged his team's efforts despite their defeat: "Today my guys gave everything they have. They are fighting well, playing well, creating chances. Of course, Newcastle were the better team. I don't have many negative things to say to my guys," he said.
"The situation is really bad, but I want to fight and create something here. I saw some good moments from the team today. But we have to understand really well which players are ready for the Premier League."
Southampton will travel to Ipswich Town next weekend as they seek their first away win of the league campaign while trying to avoid setting an unwanted record for the lowest-ever Premier League points total.
