Eddie Howe has emphasised that ending Newcastle United's long trophy drought is his primary aim. This comes as the team prepares for the EFL Cup quarter-final against Brentford on Wednesday. Newcastle has not secured a major trophy since their FA Cup victory in 1955, marking nearly seven decades without silverware.
Since the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund took over in 2021, Newcastle has consistently reached the latter stages of cup competitions. They have made it to the EFL Cup quarter-finals for three consecutive seasons, a first in their history. However, they have only advanced from two of their previous 11 quarter-finals, achieving this in 1975-76 and 2022-23, finishing as runners-up both times.

Howe came close to breaking this streak during his first full season in charge in 2022-23. Unfortunately, Newcastle lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the EFL Cup final. Despite this setback, Howe remains optimistic about his team's potential to succeed this season.
Howe is determined to lead Newcastle to victory, stating: "It's what we're here for. I made it very clear when I came to Newcastle that it's what I wanted to achieve. I speak on behalf of the players and coaching staff in that respect." He believes reaching this stage of the competition highlights their goal and determination.
Reflecting on past teams' efforts at St James' Park, Howe acknowledges their willingness but believes his squad can finally secure a trophy. He noted that Saturday's impressive 4-0 win over Leicester City demonstrated their capability and quality.
As they progress through the competition, Howe understands the challenges each round presents. "These games take on huge importance when you get towards the latter stages," he said. The team knows they must maintain high performance levels to compete with any division rival.
Howe added: "I think the willingness has been there from previous teams, but we want to be the team that can get over the line and achieve something special." He stressed that nothing will be taken for granted as they strive for success.
Newcastle fans hope this season could finally bring an end to their long wait for a major trophy. With Howe at the helm and recent performances showing promise, there is renewed optimism among supporters.
