Martin Dubravka has committed to Newcastle United with a new contract, extending his stay at St James' Park until the end of next season. This decision follows his rejection of a January transfer to the Saudi Pro League. Despite rumours of Newcastle's interest in James Trafford, Dubravka remains a key player for the team.
Dubravka's previous contract was set to expire at the end of this season, and there were strong indications he might leave for Al-Shabab in January. He even bid farewell to fans after a victory against Arsenal but continued playing, starting in the next match against Bromley. Discussions with Eddie Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell influenced his decision to stay.

Nick Pope began the season as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper under Eddie Howe. However, an injury in December provided Dubravka with an opportunity to reclaim his spot. Although he struggled last season when Pope was injured, leading to a seventh-place finish for Newcastle, Dubravka has shown more confidence this time around.
Despite Dubravka's improved form, his position as the number one goalkeeper is not entirely secure. Nick Pope has returned from injury, and James Trafford is again being linked with a move to Newcastle. The Daily Mail reported that Trafford's transfer could be finalised by the end of this season.
Dubravka has demonstrated better performances recently, achieving a save rate of 70.7%, which ranks him 10th among Premier League goalkeepers who have played at least 10 matches. However, James Trafford is having an exceptional season with Burnley in the Championship.
The 22-year-old Trafford has only conceded nine goals in 32 matches and leads the league with an impressive save rate of 87.5%. He has also prevented 9.3 goals based on expected goals on target data and maintained 23 clean sheets, including 11 consecutive ones.
Eddie Howe acknowledged Dubravka's dedication despite having options to leave in January. "It's no secret that [Dubravka] had options to move on in January, but he deserves huge credit for keeping his focus," Howe stated. "We are delighted Martin is staying with us."
The competition for the goalkeeper position at Newcastle remains intense as they aim for higher league standings. With both Dubravka and potential newcomer Trafford showing strong performances, it will be interesting to see how this battle unfolds over the coming months.
