Newcastle United Shows Progress Despite Narrow Win Against Burnley, Says Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe commended Newcastle United's performance following a hard-fought victory over Burnley. Despite challenges, the team secured three points and demonstrated improvement in their recent matches.

Eddie Howe expressed confidence in Newcastle United's progress, even though they narrowly secured a win against Burnley, who played with ten men. At St James' Park, Bruno Guimaraes scored directly from a corner, and Anthony Gordon added another from the penalty spot before halftime. Despite Lucas Pires receiving a red card early on, Newcastle couldn't extend their lead, which was cut short by Zian Flemming's late penalty.

Howe acknowledged that he anticipated a stronger showing from his team but remains optimistic about their trajectory after earning 10 points in their last four games. "It was a bizarre ending because we looked like we were home at 2-0 up," he stated. "One goal can always change things and then the penalty happens. The extra man advantage then goes out of the window, and you have to see that bit out."

Newcastle United Progresses After Burnley Win

Despite the numerical advantage, Newcastle struggled to break down Burnley's defense in the second half. Howe admitted, "We didn't do well in the right areas; we didn't do enough in the second half to break them down." However, he took solace in securing three points and emphasized that the team is heading in the right direction.

Yoane Wissa made his much-anticipated debut for Newcastle as a substitute after joining from Brentford over the summer. Howe commented positively on Wissa's performance: "It's good for him, and it's good for us. There is a lot more to come from him. He's building his fitness up."

Burnley has now suffered six consecutive Premier League defeats, matching their longest losing streak in the league. Scott Parker's team remains 19th on the table, four points away from safety. Despite this setback, Parker found positives in their performance against Newcastle.

"It was an incredible performance from us," Parker said. "That was probably our best performance of the season." He highlighted that although they have had strong performances before, they sometimes lacked intensity. He praised his team's resilience and determination to get back into the game.

Parker believes this match set a new standard for his young squad: "The biggest thing now is these players have set a bar [with this performance]. It's a young group that is developing." He hopes this display will serve as a blueprint for future matches.
