Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes Calls Performance 'A Mess' After Sunderland Derby Defeat

Bruno Guimaraes expressed his disappointment over Newcastle United's performance in their recent Tyne-Wear derby loss to Sunderland. The match, which ended with a 1-0 victory for Sunderland due to Nick Woltemade's own goal, marked the first Premier League meeting between the two teams since March 2016. It was notable for having the fewest shots and lowest expected goals (xG) total of any Premier League game this season.

The game saw only 11 shots, the lowest in a single match since Aston Villa faced Crystal Palace in March 2023. Newcastle managed six shots, with just two on target, extending their winless streak against Sunderland to 10 league matches (three draws and seven losses). After suffering their sixth league defeat of the season, Newcastle now sits in 12th place.

Guimaraes was visibly frustrated with the team's performance. "It's a tough one to accept for me," he said. "I'm very frustrated. One of those weeks, we were very excited at the training ground, but we came here and didn't perform the way we can perform. So frustrated, and it makes me feel angry about our performance today."

Despite being responsible for both of Newcastle's shots on target, Guimaraes contributed only 0.08 xG to the team's overall total of 0.24. He felt that they failed to demand more from themselves during the game. "We were not there. No shooting the ball, no crossing the ball, no passing," he lamented.

Guimaraes also acknowledged that they should have been more proactive against Sunderland's style of play. "We should have demanded the ball more," he noted. "I think we just accepted the way they will play, long balls, win the duels." He emphasised that winning duels is crucial in derby matches.

When asked if this was his most painful defeat since joining Newcastle, Guimaraes confirmed: "Definitely, yes. It's not just as a defeat, more the way we play." His frustration was evident as he reflected on what could have been a great opportunity for Newcastle to surpass Sunderland in standings.

The fans' criticism was understandable to Guimaraes given how disappointing it was to miss such an opportunity. "It's so frustrating for me to come here today," he admitted. "But the fans are right [to criticise] because it's a tough one to accept."

This latest setback leaves Newcastle searching for answers as they aim to improve their form and climb up from their current league position.
