Eddie Howe Lauds Fan Support For Sandro Tonali In Newcastle's Win Over Tottenham

Eddie Howe commended Newcastle United fans for supporting Sandro Tonali in his Premier League return against Tottenham. Tonali, back after a 10-month ban, contributed to the team's 2-1 victory. The midfielder's performance and the fans' reception highlighted a strong player-supporter bond.

Eddie Howe praised Newcastle United's fans for their support of Sandro Tonali during his Premier League return in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham. Tonali, who came on as a substitute in the 68th minute, made his first league appearance since serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

Before the match, numerous Italy-themed flags were displayed to show support for Tonali. A banner reading "Midfield maestro from Milano" was also visible. Howe expressed his delight at the fans' response, especially on a day when Alexander Isak's 78th-minute goal decided the game.

Tonali's Warm Return Boosts Newcastle

"I didn't know that was going to happen with the wall of flags, so it was a brilliant surprise," Howe said. "Visually, it was incredible. Sandro was emotional and his performance when he came on was outstanding."

Howe noted the significant difference in Tonali's impact compared to his midweek appearance against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. "We were in need of a spark and I thought he gave us that," Howe added.

Tonali's return was marked by an emotional atmosphere created by the fans, which Howe acknowledged as crucial for maintaining a strong relationship between players and supporters.

Transfer Window Reflections

Howe also addressed Newcastle's relatively quiet transfer window, where they failed to secure several targets, including Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. "It's always important to try to build momentum in your season," Howe said. "It's been a turbulent time for the club off the pitch throughout this last transfer window."

He emphasised the need to focus on football now that the transfer window has closed. "Hopefully we can just concentrate on the football and get the players playing as well as they can," he added.

Isak's Contribution and Team Strategy

Matchwinner Alexander Isak also praised Newcastle's supporters after scoring his first goal of the season to secure all three points. "It is my first goal for the season so it's a good feeling to score and get the win," he told Sky Sports.

Isak explained their strategy against Tottenham: "Generally, we weren't expecting to have too much of the ball. We wanted to be dangerous on the counter-attack." He acknowledged that while it wasn't their most beautiful game, their solid defence and two goals were key to their success.

Home Advantage and Energy Boost

"We've always felt like we have that extra energy at home," Isak continued. He mentioned how small changes in their performance during the second half provided them with an energy boost that helped secure the win.

The match highlighted Newcastle's resilience and ability to capitalise on home advantage, with both Howe and Isak recognising the vital role played by their supporters.
