Neymar Tears As Brazil Names World Cup Squad In Emotional Return After ACL Injury

Neymar has returned to Brazil’s World Cup squad after almost three years out, and the forward said the recall left Neymar in tears for hours. The 34-year-old, who has scored 79 goals for the national team, is again in contention to lead Brazil as the five-time champions chase a sixth title.

The forward last played for the Selecao in 2023, when Neymar tore an anterior cruciate ligament during a match against Uruguay. That injury came soon after a transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to Al-Hilal, and the long recovery placed serious doubt on Neymar featuring at another World Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti had not picked Neymar during the injury lay-off, but the Brazil coach always suggested a route back. Ancelotti said Neymar could rejoin the squad if Neymar proved full fitness before the tournament. On 1 May 2026, that opportunity arrived when Neymar’s name appeared in Brazil’s final World Cup list.

Speaking after the announcement, Neymar tried to describe the emotional moment. "It's difficult to explain with words the emotions I've felt," Neymar said, as reported by ESPN. "I want to thank everyone here. This call-up wasn't just for me but for everyone involved in the process, everyone who was with me on the pitch, off the pitch, looking after our safety, our fitness and our meals. I admit that I cried for several hours because it was by no means easy to arrive at this point. Those who have been with me through it all know that it was difficult, it was hard. But after hearing my name on the list, all the sacrifices and all the effort was worth it."

Brazil have been drawn in Group C, where the Selecao will meet Morocco, Haiti and Scotland. The fixtures place Neymar against varied styles, with African, Caribbean and European opposition in the first phase. The group will decide whether Brazil can build early momentum for another deep World Cup run.

There were notable omissions when Ancelotti confirmed the Brazil World Cup squad alongside Neymar’s return. Joao Pedro, named Chelsea’s player of the season, did not make the list despite strong club form. Richarlison, who worked under Ancelotti at Everton and scored a spectacular goal at the 2022 World Cup, has also missed out this time.

After the squad news, Neymar shared further appreciation for long-term backing from fans. "Thank you for your support, for always believing in me. I'm here to thank you for your support throughout my career. We're in this together as Brazil heads for a sixth World Cup title."

Neymar’s selection closes a difficult chapter that began with the ACL injury against Uruguay in 2023. The recall confirms Neymar has convinced Ancelotti about current fitness and readiness. For Brazil, the decision restores the country’s record goalscorer to the squad as the team aims to challenge again on football’s biggest stage.
