Neymar Latest Injury Update: Brazil Star faces Fresh Setback ahead of World Cup 2026

Neymar Jr’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have hit a familiar hurdle. The Brazilian superstar missed the national team’s training session in Teresópolis on Wednesday and was sent for additional medical examinations on his right calf, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed.

The 34-year-old, who has not featured for Brazil since 2023, was surprisingly included in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad despite limited club action. His boyhood club Santos had earlier described the issue as a “minor calf” strain with swelling. Club doctor Rodrigo Zogaib stated last week that Neymar was dealing with a small edema and was on track to return within seven days. However, the timing of this setback — just over two weeks before Brazil’s tournament opener — has triggered renewed worry.

This latest problem forced Neymar to sit out Santos’ recent fixtures: a 2-2 Copa Sudamericana draw against San Lorenzo on May 20 and a 3-2 Serie A loss to Grêmio three days later. It adds to a long list of injury troubles that have plagued the forward in recent years.

Neymar Injury Latest Update

The current right calf issue, involving minor swelling and a small edema, has kept Neymar out of training with the national side. Following the additional tests conducted on Wednesday, concerns have grown about his readiness for Brazil’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Panama on May 31 and Egypt on June 6.

This injury comes on the back of the serious left knee ACL and meniscus rupture he suffered in October 2023, which sidelined him for nearly two years and limited his appearances. At 34, Neymar’s recurring fitness battles continue to raise questions about his durability as he aims for one final World Cup appearance.

Despite the concerns, Neymar remains Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer and a talismanic figure for the five-time world champions. Brazil open Group C against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium, followed by clashes with Haiti and Scotland. With the World Cup fast approaching, the CBF and Ancelotti face a critical decision on whether to gamble on Neymar’s fitness or prepare a replacement.
