Rematching their Group A match, Nigeria and Ivory Coast are facing off in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday (February 12) at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium.
Since the Super Eagles upset the Elephants earlier in the competition, a lot has happened. The hosts have overcome adversity when all looked lost, and they now seem to be building momentum for the Abidjan decider.
While supporters of Ivory Coast believed that their team could qualify for the final before AFCON 2023 began, things were different for the Super Eagles, who went from being outsiders to win the trophy to being the top-ranked team remaining in the competition following early elimination from the knockout stages by Egypt, Morocco, and reigning champions Senegal.
Even though the three-time champions had exceptional potential, there were concerns about Jose Peseiro's club because of their lackluster games and playoff outcomes. But in the tournament proper, the West African team has displayed a different side of themselves.
They created opportunities in their opening match against Equatorial Guinea but lost, changed their strategy to overcome Ivory Coast, and showed defensive cunning throughout their run through the knockout stages to get within striking distance of a fourth title.
Although Stanley Nwabali's contribution between the posts has received a lot of attention following his South Africa penalty-saving antics, the Chippa United goalkeeper's confidence has calmed a previously uneasy backline.
Teboho Mokoena's 90th-minute penalty ended the Super Eagles' four-game winning streak, but Nwabali's only open-play letdown was Iban Salvador's goal in the tournament debut for the goalkeeper.
Even though Victor Osimhen hasn't scored since the 1-1 draw with Nzalang Nacional, Peseiro's team has made progress thanks to his tenacity off the ball, which has created opportunities for teammates and scared the opposition. This is more intriguing to watch for Osimhen's teammates.
Although he set up Ademola Lookman's first goal against Cameroon in the round of 16, the current African Footballer of the Year has had several goals disallowed, usually because he tends to be caught offside.
He has also won crucial spot kicks against his opponents on Sunday and in Wednesday's semi-final. Osimhen's ability to affect games could help the Super Eagles win a fourth African championship, even if he doesn't score.
