NorthEast United vs Mohammedan SC, ISL 2024-25: Highlanders Goal-Scoring Run Halted in a Goalless Draw

By MyKhel Staff

NorthEast United FC's prolific attack was neutralized as Mohammedan SC secured a gritty 0-0 draw at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati in an Indian Super League (ISL) clash. Highlanders were dominating possession with 60.6% but struggled to penetrate Mohammedan SC's disciplined defense.

Both teams registered two shots on target and 10 interceptions, but NorthEast United FC's 27 crosses outnumbered Mohammedan SC's eight. The visitors' ability to contain the league's top-scoring side, which had netted 29 goals, was a testament to their defensive resilience.

First-Half Tensions

Mohammedan SC came close to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute. Adison Singh spotted Alexis Gomez with a clever lob, but Gomez's left-footed strike narrowly missed the target. Mohammedan SC continued pressing for opportunities.

Adison was again at the center of action near halftime. Receiving a lofted pass in the box, he managed a shot despite the awkward delivery, but NorthEast United FC goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh made a vital save to keep the scoreline intact.

NorthEast United's Response

The second half saw NorthEast United FC launch counterattacks. In the 57th minute, a free-kick taken by Alaaeddine Ajaraie cleverly found Parthib Gogoi unmarked in the penalty box. However, Gogoi's shot was swiftly blocked by Mohammedan SC's defenders, leading to a corner.

Mohammedan SC responded three minutes later with Alexis Gomez taking a long-range free-kick. His powerful attempt seemed destined for the top corner, but Gurmeet Singh once again demonstrated exceptional reflexes, denying Mohammedan SC a crucial lead.

In the 70th minute, Guillermo Fernandez almost broke the deadlock for NorthEast United FC with a sharp effort from an acute angle, but Mohammedan SC's Padam Chhetri stood firm. Moments later, Mohammed Bemammer delivered a precise cross for Asheer Akhtar, whose header missed the mark, summing up the evening's frustrations for both sides.

Alexis Gomez turned out to be the key performer of the match. The midfielder completed 18 of 28 passes, created a goal-scoring opportunity, and made a critical tackle, showcasing his all-around impact. NorthEast United FC will face Punjab FC on January 10, while Mohammedan SC take on Bengaluru FC on January 11.
