Northeast United vs Mohun Bagan: Mariners eye Victory in Guwahati, Highlanders up for Fight

NorthEast United FC will host Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their opening match of the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) season at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Monday, October 12.

The contest presents an early test for both teams, with the Highlanders eager to recover from a heavy defeat and the Mariners looking to carry their recent silverware-winning momentum into the league. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM IST, with Juan Pedro Benali's NorthEast United facing a Mohun Bagan side led by Greek coach Panagiotis Dilmperis.

Recent Form: Contrasting Fortunes

NorthEast United enter the fixture after suffering a 7-2 defeat against East Bengal in the IFA Shield semi-final. Despite reaching the last four in their debut appearance in the tournament, the Highlanders were exposed defensively and will need a much-improved performance against the Kolkata giants.

Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, defeated East Bengal 1-0 in the IFA Shield final on October 8 to lift their 24th title in the competition. The Mariners also drew 1-1 against NorthEast United in the IFA Shield group stage, with Ethyan Gonzalez and Lee Harry Erwin scoring for their respective sides.

What the Coaches Said

Benali expects his players to prepare for different tactical approaches from the visitors. The NorthEast United coach also made a pointed observation about Mohun Bagan's approach to matches.

"They know how to lie, how to press the referees. I am not criticising them, it's part of the game, they do it very well. They're a very good team," Benali said.

Dilmperis, meanwhile, is determined to begin his ISL campaign with a victory, while acknowledging that his side may need time to sustain the intensity he wants.

"The culture of the team demands wins. We should win. There is no other result," the Mohun Bagan coach said.

Team News

NorthEast United have strengthened their squad with additions including Pramveer Singh, Antonio Moyano, Eneko Satrústegui and Nikola Ninković. Moroccan forward Allaeddine Ajaraie, returning after a loan spell at Persija Jakarta, will be central to their attacking ambitions. Benali is expected to have a fully fit squad available. Ajaraie has already been excellent in front of goal and his form will be crucial for the Highlanders.

Mohun Bagan have added Lallianzuala Chhangte, Dejan Dražić, Samir Zeljković, Miguel Figueira and Rahul Bheke. However, striker Jamie Maclaren remains a doubt with a hamstring injury, while Lalengmawia Ralte faces a fitness test after picking up an injury in training. Dejan Drazic also had a head injury and subsequent stitches in the IFA Shield final.

NorthEast United will look to exploit home advantage and rediscover defensive solidity, while Mohun Bagan will aim to control possession and impose their attacking intensity. With both sides targeting a strong start, the opening exchanges could prove decisive.
