Norway Defeats Brazil 2-1 As Haaland Fires Two Goals To Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

Erling Haaland delivered two late goals as Norway beat Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup round of 16, sending Stale Solbakken's side into a first-ever World Cup quarter-final. The result ended Brazil's campaign and set up a last-eight meeting with England after a tense finish in which Neymar scored from the spot.

Across the tournament, Haaland has seven goals, placing the Manchester City striker level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot standings. Those goals have come from only 18 attempts, giving Haaland a 39% conversion rate, the highest at a single World Cup, with 15 or more shots, since Gary Lineker scored six from 15 efforts in 1986.

Norway beat Brazil as Haaland stars

Norway's opener arrived in the 79th minute when Haaland rose above Premier League opponent Gabriel Magalhaes to head home. In the final minute of normal time, Haaland struck again from distance into the bottom-right corner. Norway seemed safe at 2-0 before Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty, beating Orjan Nyland after an earlier Bruno Guimaraes miss.

Haaland became the first Norway player to score twice in a knockout match at a major international tournament, whether World Cup or European Championship. Every Norway multi-goal display at a major tournament now belongs to Haaland at this World Cup, with braces against Brazil, Senegal and Iraq underlining the forward's impact for Solbakken's team.

After the final whistle, Haaland led the Viking row celebration in front of Norway's travelling support, joined by players and staff on the pitch. Yet Haaland admitted the real party was thousands of kilometres away in Oslo, where fans gathered in streets and squares to enjoy Norway's victory over the five-time champions.

Speaking about the reaction back home, Haaland said: "I wish I was on those streets; I wish I was involved in it. Everyone has to enjoy themselves. All of Norway has to enjoy themselves. It's one of the sickest days ever in Norwegian history. You just have to enjoy it, because this is sick."

Norway's win also extended a unique record in meetings with Brazil. Across five head-to-head games, Brazil have never beaten Norway, with three Norway victories and two draws. This round-of-16 loss also brought Brazil's earliest World Cup exit since 1990, when Argentina knocked Brazil out 1-0 at the same stage.

Solbakken underlined the scale of the performance and addressed supporters across the country. Solbakken said: "I think all Norwegians are experiencing the night of a lifetime. They will probably party for a week or so! Erling was our match-winner, but I'm happy that everyone played their part on the greatest night in Norwegian football history."

Solbakken praised the unity inside Norway's camp, highlighting commitment and togetherness. Solbakken said: "Everyone played their part. This is a great group. They love being together, they train well, they help each other and protect each other. We have a strong culture and we have an opportunity to let people be themselves and say whatever they want. That's very important both when things go well and when they don't."

Norway now turn focus towards a quarter-final against England, carrying momentum from eliminating Brazil and from Haaland's dominant form. Brazil, who had reached at least the quarter-finals at eight straight World Cups before this tournament, leave earlier than expected, while Norway's players and fans continue to savour a landmark campaign.
