Norway Haaland Leads 2-1 World Cup Knockout Win Over Ivory Coast

Norway reached a new milestone at the World Cup, defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 in the round of 32 and setting up a knockout clash with Brazil in New York, as Erling Haaland struck an 86th-minute winner at Dallas Stadium.

The victory delivered Norway a first ever win in a World Cup knockout tie, and the team became the first European side since Ukraine in 2006 to win their maiden knockout match at the finals, adding further weight to this achievement.

Haaland Leads Norway Knockout Win

Haaland decided the contest late, after Antonio Nusa had earlier scored for Norway and Amad Diallo replied for Ivory Coast. The forward’s goal also kept an extraordinary international sequence alive, with Haaland now finding the net in 13 straight competitive games for Norway.

Across that run, Haaland has registered 25 goals, lifting the overall record to 60 strikes from 53 international appearances. Those numbers underline the influence Haaland holds in this Norway side, even as attention already turns towards the high-profile meeting with Brazil.

Despite the scale of that upcoming challenge, Haaland suggested the group feels free of pressure after breaking several barriers in this tournament. "Its history, it feels unbelievable, Haaland told FIFA. We managed to qualify for the first time in 28 years, we managed to go through the group stage and now weve managed to go through to the next round and meet Brazil in New York. Its incredible, so now everything is a bonus. Now we can play with our shoulders down and just enjoy it because I dont think well ever have this feeling again."

Match figures showed Norway edging the expected goals measure 1.9 to 1.49, even though Ivory Coast produced more attempts, with 14 shots against nine, and enjoyed greater presence in Norway’s area by registering 48 touches in the box compared with Norway’s 26.

Norway head coach Stale Solbakken acknowledged Ivory Coast’s threat, yet felt his side earned the result. "I think it was a very even game, the Norway boss told FIFA. These are two good teams and it could have gone both ways, but we finished off the game strongly and managed to come back after the 1-1. They had a good free kick towards the end, and situations in which they could have scored, but all in all, I think maybe we were a little bit better than them, but praise for Ivory Coast, who played a very good game. It's the first time for Norway that we've won in the knockout rounds, so we have to take that on board. Now we can rest a little bit and prepare for Brazil."

The win closed a 28-year wait since Norway last reached a World Cup, and with progression through both the group stage and the first knockout round already secured, the squad now approaches Brazil aware that every further step will build on a historic campaign.
