Nottingham Forest Secures 2-1 Victory Over West Ham To Maintain Champions League Aspirations

Nottingham Forest's 2-1 win against West Ham keeps their Champions League hopes alive. Goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Nikola Milenkovic were crucial for the visitors.

Nottingham Forest kept their Champions League dreams alive with a 2-1 victory against West Ham. Morgan Gibbs-White and Nikola Milenkovic were the scorers. A loss would have ended their top-five hopes, and even a draw would have left them as outsiders before the Premier League's final matchday.

West Ham's Alphonse Areola made crucial errors, gifting Forest an early lead. In the 11th minute, Gibbs-White capitalised on a weak pass to score into an open net. This goal was celebrated by Forest players holding up Taiwo Awoniyi's shirt, who recently had surgery after a collision in a previous match.

Forest Beats West Ham to Stay in Champions League Race

Chris Wood came close twice late in the first half, including hitting the post from a corner. However, Forest extended their lead in the 61st minute when Milenkovic redirected Anthony Elanga's free-kick into the net. The goal stood after a lengthy VAR check for offside.

West Ham fought back late in the game. Jarrod Bowen scored with an impressive volley in the 86th minute. Despite this, they couldn't find an equaliser during 16 minutes of added time. Niclas Fullkrug's header was saved by Matz Sels, securing Forest's win.

Forest could still reach the top five if they beat Chelsea and other results go their way. Meanwhile, West Ham ended their season without a win in five home games (three draws, two losses). This is their first home defeat in a Premier League finale since 2016-17.

Gibbs-White has now scored in consecutive Premier League matches, matching his tally from his previous 16 appearances. Forest have benefited from opposition mistakes this season, scoring 17 goals from such errors—the most since Chelsea's 21 in 2013-14.

Data Insights and Future Prospects

Areola's mistake was costly for West Ham; he has made three errors leading to goals this season—the most by any player at the club since Lukasz Fabianski in 2019-20. Despite Bowen's late goal setting up a tense finish, West Ham couldn't capitalise further.

The result leaves City and Newcastle potentially out of reach for Forest next Sunday. However, if Chelsea falters and other results favour them, Champions League football might still come to City Ground.
