Nottingham Forest And Aston Villa Draw 1-1 As Williams Shines And Forest Gain Breathing Space From Relegation

Nottingham Forest earned a valuable 1-1 draw against top-four contenders Aston Villa, easing relegation concerns. The point moved Forest three clear of the Premier League drop zone and kept Vitor Pereira’s team outside the bottom three after a disciplined display at the City Ground.

The result also stretched Forest’s unbeaten Premier League run to four matches and lifted the side to 16th place. That position gain grew in importance after 18th-placed Tottenham lost 1-0 at Sunderland on Sunday, leaving Forest with extra breathing space in a tight survival battle.

Forest and Villa draw as Williams shines

Aston Villa struck first after 23 minutes when Murillo diverted Morgan Rogers’ dangerous left-sided cross into the net. The own goal came during a spell of pressure from Unai Emery’s visitors, and Rogers then clipped the crossbar following a precise pass from John McGinn in another threatening moment.

Forest answered seven minutes before half-time through Neco Williams, who drove a low effort into the bottom-left corner from 18 yards. That goal swung some momentum back towards the hosts. Clear openings then became scarce up to the break, with both back lines tightening after the equaliser.

The second half opened in a cagey style, with few chances until the hour. Morgan Gibbs-White saw a deflected attempt smartly saved by Marco Bizot’s outstretched leg, before McGinn tested Matz Sels with a stretching stop at the other end during a tense period.

Rogers later fired over the bar after Sels failed to claim a cross from Ross Barkley, wasting a promising chance. Ollie Watkins then missed another clear opportunity for Villa, leaving the visitors frustrated and allowing Forest to hold on for a draw that felt hard earned.

Data highlighted Williams’ impact across Forest’s recent matches. Williams has now been directly involved in three goals in his last two Premier League games (onegoal, twoassists), more than in his previous 32 outings combined (two). The Wales full-back also produced a game-high four shots, with three on target.

Despite the positive point, Forest’s home form remained an issue, with the draw extending an eight-game winless Premier League run at the City Ground, including four draws and four defeats. Pereira’s side still created slightly better chances overall, finishing with 1.2 expected goals compared to Villa’s 0.98 in a competitive contest.
