Nottingham Forest Emphasises Defence In Goalless Draw Against Arsenal To Keep Champions League Hopes Alive

Nottingham Forest secured a vital point against Arsenal with a goalless draw, showcasing improved defensive tactics under Nuno Espirito Santo. This performance keeps their Champions League ambitions intact.

Nottingham Forest's manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, highlighted the need for his team to return to fundamental strategies following their 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the City Ground. This result came after Forest suffered consecutive losses to Fulham and Newcastle United, jeopardising their ambitions for a top-four finish in the Premier League. Despite the setbacks, they managed to secure a point against Arsenal, who failed to score in back-to-back league matches for the first time since May 2023.

Forest's performance against Arsenal was marked by limited opportunities, with an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.37. Nicolas Dominguez and Chris Wood were the only players to register shots on target during a match that offered few chances. This goalless draw was Forest's first in the Premier League since October 2023. Among current Premier League teams, only Tottenham had a longer ongoing streak without a goalless draw before this round of fixtures.

Forest Focuses on Defence in Arsenal Draw

Nuno's squad remains third in the league standings, with Manchester City trailing by just one point after their victory over Tottenham. Interestingly, Manchester City is also Forest's next opponent in the league. The team's defensive solidity has been pivotal this season, as they have kept 11 clean sheets so far, second only to Liverpool's 12. Nuno emphasised that strengthening their defence was essential for their progress.

"I'm very happy with the way we did things, the way we played against Arsenal," Nuno told BBC Sport. "It's very difficult to play against them. They're a very good team. It requires a lot of effort. We were solid and compact. A very positive game."

Nuno acknowledged that after conceding too many goals recently, it was vital for Forest to return to basics and focus on maintaining clean sheets. He praised his players' efforts and organisation during the match against Arsenal: "We had a couple of moments to do it better. But in terms of the game, positive, because it was very important to go back to the team we are, that allows us to be successful."

The manager also noted Arsenal's threats from various areas of play, including set-pieces: "They have danger all over the place. Set-pieces are some of them. It requires focus." He commended his team's preparation and execution: "The boys did well. We prepared it."

Looking Ahead

Nuno stressed that more than anything else, maintaining an organised and balanced approach is crucial: "This is one of the main messages, more than anything, the feeling of being a team that doesn't concede too many chances, always in the right places." He encouraged his team to enjoy their journey while acknowledging that victories aren't always guaranteed: "We have to enjoy the journey and realise it's not always possible to go with a victory."

Despite recent challenges, Forest remains competitive in their pursuit of Champions League qualification. Opta's supercomputer gives them a 39% chance of finishing in the top four this season; however, even a top-five finish could potentially secure them a spot in Europe's elite competition.
