Onana To Start For Manchester United Against Lyon In Europa League Quarter-Final Second Leg

Ruben Amorim has confirmed that goalkeeper Andre Onana will start for Manchester United against Lyon in the Europa League. Despite recent errors, Onana's experience is deemed crucial for the team's performance.

Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Andre Onana will be starting for Manchester United against Lyon on Thursday. Onana's recent performance included two errors in the 2-2 draw with Lyon during the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final. Despite being praised as superior to Lyon, Onana allowed a free-kick from Thiago Almada and mishandled the ball, leading to Rayan Cherki's equaliser.

Amorim explained his decision to reinstate Onana for the upcoming match. "Onana will play tomorrow," he stated. As a coach, Amorim aims to support players both physically and mentally. He felt it was beneficial for Onana to sit out last weekend, giving Altay Bayindir a chance instead. However, Bayindir's performance was not impressive, as United lost 4-1 to Newcastle.

Onana Returns as United Face Lyon Again

Onana has made eight mistakes leading directly to goals since last season, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper. Despite this, Amorim believes in Onana's potential and wants to help him improve. "We need to improve every position," Amorim said, highlighting the importance of enhancing team performance overall.

Reports suggest United might replace Onana in the summer, but Amorim is focused on developing the current squad. He emphasised that improving all positions is crucial for future success. "If our team scores more goals and is more dangerous in forward positions we will defend better," he added.

Harry Maguire also expressed confidence in Onana's abilities. "Andre has proved in his past that he is an excellent goalkeeper," Maguire said, noting Onana's experience and achievements in his career. Maguire believes that despite ups and downs, it's essential to regain confidence and perform well again.

Lyon's European Record

This match marks United's third encounter with Lyon at Old Trafford in European competition; they won both previous meetings. Lyon has been strong against English teams recently, losing only one of their last nine European games against them. They are unbeaten in their last 12 away Europa League matches since December 2017.

The upcoming match against Lyon is crucial for Manchester United as they aim to advance further in the Europa League. With Onana back in goal and support from teammates like Maguire, United hopes to overcome past mistakes and secure a victory at Old Trafford.
