Panama Defeats South Africa As Cordoba And Ramos Strike To Boost Momentum

Panama stepped up 2026 World Cup preparations with a 2-1 victory over South Africa at DHL Cape Town Stadium, sealing the friendly with two goals from defenders. The result followed a 1-1 draw between the same sides the previous week and came on a night when Jordan and Saudi Arabia also tested themselves.

The visitors struck through Jose Cordoba and Jiovany Ramos, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi briefly levelled for South Africa. Jordan fought back to draw 2-2 with Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia lost 2-1 against Serbia, as several national teams continued World Cup preparations with demanding fixtures against strong opponents.

Panama Beats South Africa

Panama turned limited shooting opportunities into goals, underlining efficiency that could prove important during World Cup preparations. Thomas Christiansen’s team attempted eight shots and generated 0.92 expected goals, compared with South Africa’s six efforts worth 0.47 expected goals, reflecting a tighter defensive display and more dangerous attacking situations in key moments.

Team Goals Shots Expected Goals (xG)
Panama 2 8 0.92
South Africa 1 6 0.47

Ramos produced a complete performance during these World Cup preparations, deciding the contest and contributing heavily in possession. Ramos had the second-most touches for Panama with 55, the second-most passes with 41, recovered possession five times and shared the team lead for completed dribbles with two, underlining influence in both penalty areas.

Player Touches Passes Possessions Won Completed Dribbles
Jiovany Ramos 55 41 5 2

The first half in Cape Town was cagey, with clear chances rare as both defences settled. Ismael Diaz produced the only shot on target before the break, heading straight at the goalkeeper from close range, while efforts from Aubrey Modiba and Tshepang Moremi were blocked by alert Panama defenders near the area.

The match opened up after half-time, and Cordoba broke the deadlock in the 58th minute from close range. Mbokazi answered eight minutes later, beating Orlando Mosquera with a drive from outside the box into the top-left corner, before Ramos decided the contest by heading in Jose Luis Rodriguez’s cross with 14 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, Jordan showed resilience in World Cup preparations by twice battling back to draw 2-2 with Nigeria. Mousa Tamari scored first for Jordan, but Nigeria led 2-1 at half-time through goals from Moses Simon and Emmanuel Fernandez, only for Mohammad Al Aldahod to strike an equaliser in the 77th minute.

Saudi Arabia endured another difficult step in World Cup preparations with a 2-1 defeat to Serbia. The European side turned the match around in the second half as Strahinja Pavlovic and Aleksandr Mitrovic scored within four minutes, leaving Saudi Arabia again searching for answers before travelling to the tournament.

The closing stages in Cape Town underlined Panama’s control, as South Africa failed to register another shot after Ramos’ winner. Both nations, along with Jordan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Serbia, now shift full attention to the global stage, taking forward lessons from these friendlies as World Cup preparations continue.
