Lucas Paqueta Expresses Desire To Return To Flamengo This Summer

Lucas Paqueta expressed his wish to rejoin Flamengo during the summer transfer window but chose not to push for a departure from West Ham. The midfielder, who previously played for Flamengo before moving to AC Milan in the 2018-19 season, scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 49 league appearances for the Brazilian club. Despite interest from Flamengo over the past two seasons, Paqueta decided to remain with West Ham.

Flamengo showed interest in Paqueta, which he confirmed, while Aston Villa was also linked with the 28-year-old. West Ham has faced challenges this season under Nuno Espirito Santo, who replaced Graham Potter as manager. The team currently sits 18th in the Premier League standings. Paqueta has netted three goals in 11 league matches this season, just one shy of his best tally at the club.

Paqueta's decision to stay was driven by respect for West Ham, although he remains committed to returning to Flamengo eventually. "The second moment [that he had talks with Flamengo], incredibly enough, was when I already knew I could continue playing normally [after the betting investigation]," Paqueta told Globoesporte.

During discussions with Flamengo coach Filipe Luis, a friend of his, Paqueta expressed his strong desire to return. "That's when I felt even more of a desire to return to Flamengo," he shared. He also communicated this wish to his agents but ultimately chose not to force a move out of respect for West Ham.

Paqueta acknowledged that it was a tough decision given his age and market value. "It was a difficult decision because I'm 28 years old, I'm very young, and I still have a lot of market value out here," he explained. Despite his longing to return, he recognised that it wasn't the right time yet.

Paqueta emphasised his affection for West Ham and their support during his time at the club. He believes that one day he will return to Flamengo as the doors will always be open for him there.
