Australia Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage As Paraguay Close In On Historic Qualification
Australia secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after playing out a goalless draw against Paraguay in their final Group D fixture at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Thursday.
The stalemate was enough for Tony Popovic's side to finish second in the group behind the United States, while Paraguay's four-point haul leaves Gustavo Alfaro's men almost certain to progress as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Australia edge second place on goal difference
Australia and Paraguay both finished the group stage with four points from three matches, having each recorded one win, one draw and one defeat.
With their head-to-head record level after Thursday's draw, Australia claimed second place courtesy of a superior goal difference (0 compared to Paraguay's -2).
The Socceroos have now reached the knockout stage for just the third time in their World Cup history and for the second consecutive tournament after also advancing in Qatar in 2022.
Little to separate two cautious sides
The match itself offered few memorable moments, with both teams seemingly aware that avoiding defeat would significantly boost their qualification hopes.
Australia looked the more adventurous side throughout, dominating possession with 56 per cent, registering 12 shots to Paraguay's seven and forcing goalkeeper Orlando Gill into five saves.
Jordan Bos was Australia's brightest performer, repeatedly creating danger down the right flank alongside Cristian Volpato. The Feyenoord wing-back nearly snatched a dramatic winner in stoppage time when his curling effort drifted narrowly wide.
Paraguay improved after the interval as Julio Enciso became increasingly influential, but Gustavo Alfaro's side struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against Australia's organised defence.
Despite the late pressure from both teams, neither side could find the breakthrough in what proved to be the lowest combined expected goals (xG) match of the tournament so far.
Jordan Bos shines in otherwise forgettable contest
Bos emerged as Australia's standout player after an energetic display on both ends of the pitch.
The wing-back consistently threatened going forward while also keeping Enciso quiet defensively, capping an impressive all-round performance despite the lack of goals.
Paraguay on verge of Round of 32
Although not mathematically confirmed, Paraguay's four-point tally leaves them virtually assured of reaching the Round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Elsewhere in Group D, Turkey stunned the United States 3-2, but despite the victory, Turkey exited the tournament after losing their opening two matches.
The result confirmed the United States as Group D winners, Australia as runners-up and Paraguay as favourites to join them in the knockout rounds via the third-place qualification route.
