Paris Saint-Germain Reach Last 16 After Monaco Draw

Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the Champions League last 16 after a 2-2 draw with Monaco, clinching a 5-4 aggregate victory. A red card to Monaco's Mamadou Coulibaly shifted momentum, with Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring for PSG. Monaco's late pressure nearly altered the outcome, but PSG held firm.

Paris Saint-Germain reached the Champions League last 16 after a tense 2-2 draw with Monaco secured a 5-4 aggregate win. The holders saw their advantage threatened several times, yet Monaco’s indiscipline, including Mamadou Coulibaly’s dismissal, proved decisive. Late pressure, including Jordan Teze’s stoppage-time strike, almost forced extra time, but Paris Saint-Germain held on.

The first half brought early Monaco momentum, with two major openings wasted before the breakthrough. Mamadou Coulibaly lifted a close-range effort over from six yards, then Thilo Kehrer sent a glancing header wide from Vanderson’s cross. Paris Saint-Germain nearly punished those misses when Bradley Barcola clipped the bar, but Maghnes Akliouche then finished calmly via the left post.

The second half initially remained balanced, with both Champions League sides trading possession without clear control. The contest changed sharply when Coulibaly collected two quick yellow cards, leaving Monaco with ten players. Paris Saint-Germain capitalised immediately as Marquinhos scored from the resulting set-piece on the hour, shifting both the scoreline and the mood inside Parc des Princes.

Champions League progress for Paris Saint-Germain looked secure six minutes later. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia reacted quickest when Philipp Kohn spilled Achraf Hakimi’s long-range attempt, turning the rebound home on 66 minutes. Monaco refused to fold, and Jordan Teze pulled one back in the 91st minute. Woet Faes then headed narrowly wide from a free-kick in the 95th minute.

The data underlined Paris Saint-Germain’s threat across the Champions League contest. Paris Saint-Germain generated 2.13 expected goals from 21 attempts, compared to Monaco’s 1.16 xG from nine shots. Monaco’s red card in the French capital aligned with this swing, as the numerical disadvantage limited their attacking accuracy and control.

Earlier phases painted a different Champions League picture. By half-time, Monaco led the expected goals battle 0.82 to 0.48 and also topped shots on target by three to none. Those figures reflected a first period where Monaco pressed effectively, before the tie was reshaped by discipline issues and Paris Saint-Germain’s improved finishing.

Sebastien Pocognoli faced a difficult reflection after the Champions League playoff. Monaco collected two red cards across the two legs, and Pocognoli will question what might have happened with eleven players throughout. This was the first time Monaco had players sent off in both legs of a Champions League knockout tie, within a season featuring 33 dismissals in the competition.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League title defence stays alive after surviving Monaco’s late rally and earlier pressure. The aggregate victory owed much to seizing key moments once Monaco went down to ten players. Monaco’s missed chances and two red cards across the tie shaped the final outcome, leaving Paris Saint-Germain among the last 16 contenders.
