Paris Saint-Germain Secures UEFA Super Cup Title After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Against Tottenham

Paris Saint-Germain claimed their first UEFA Super Cup title by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties following a dramatic 2-2 draw. Late goals from Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos forced the shootout, where Nuno Mendes scored the decisive penalty.

Paris Saint-Germain secured their first UEFA Super Cup by defeating Tottenham 4-3 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regular time. Thomas Frank, managing his first competitive match, seemed poised for victory with goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. However, late strikes from Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos pushed the game to penalties, where PSG emerged victorious.

Spurs began the match energetically, with Pedro Porro narrowly missing an early chance and Richarlison testing PSG's goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier later in the half. Their efforts paid off in the 39th minute when Micky van de Ven capitalised on a rebound to score. Just before halftime, Mohammed Kudus almost doubled their lead but was flagged offside.

PSG Wins UEFA Super Cup in Penalty Shootout

Despite trailing, PSG showed determination. They thought they had scored in the 66th minute through Bradley Barcola, but it was ruled out for offside. Eventually, Vitinha set up Lee Kang-in for a goal that found the bottom-right corner. Goncalo Ramos then equalised with a powerful header from Ousmane Dembele's cross.

The penalty shootout saw Spurs initially take the lead as Vitinha missed for PSG. However, Lucas Chevalier saved Van de Ven's attempt, and Mathys Tel's miss allowed Nuno Mendes to secure the win for PSG with a decisive shot into the net.

Tottenham had recently ended a long trophy drought by winning the Europa League in May under Ange Postecoglou. Frank aimed to add another trophy but fell short despite Spurs' strong start. They managed only 26% possession but created several chances worth 1.38 xG, yet couldn't convert them into victory.

PSG entered this match without pre-season games since losing to Chelsea in July's Club World Cup final. Despite this lack of preparation, they had confidence from previous successes against English teams in 2025. History favoured them too, as Champions League winners often triumph in this competition.

PSG Overcomes Early Struggles

The first half saw PSG struggle offensively with no shots on target and limited touches in Tottenham's box. It marked only the fifth time under Luis Enrique that they failed to register a shot on target by halftime. However, they improved significantly after halftime, eventually boosting their expected goals (xG) to 1.17.

This comeback marked PSG's first time overcoming a two-goal deficit so late since May 2005 against Sochaux. Their resilience paid off as they clinched victory at Bluenergy Stadium despite initial struggles.
