Patrick Dorgu has officially joined Manchester United from Lecce for a transfer fee of £25 million (€30 million). The versatile left-back, who can also operate as a winger, has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at Old Trafford and will don the number 13 jersey. Despite initial resistance from Lecce to sell him during the January window, Manchester United succeeded in securing his signature.
Dorgu's arrival marks the second defensive signing for Ruben Amorim's team in two days, following Ayden Heaven's acquisition from Arsenal. Both players were introduced at Old Trafford before Manchester United's match against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Dorgu expressed his excitement about joining the club, stating, "I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player."

The 20-year-old Dorgu has already made 23 appearances this season, contributing three goals and one assist. His performances have attracted interest from clubs like Juventus. However, Manchester United managed to outbid their competitors to bring him into their squad. His addition is expected to provide competition for Diogo Dalot, especially with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined due to injuries.
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's technical director, praised Dorgu's abilities: "Patrick is a really exciting talent. His strong defensive and attacking attributes, adaptability and work-rate will make him a key part of Ruben Amorim's squad." At just 20 years old, Dorgu is seen as having significant potential for growth under the club's coaching staff.
During his time at Lecce in Serie A, Dorgu completed 13 dribbles, matching teammates Nikola Krstovic and Tete Morente for the highest on the team. Only Antonino Gallo surpassed him in chance creation with 26 opportunities compared to Dorgu’s 19. These statistics highlight his capability both defensively and offensively.
Dorgu shared his enthusiasm about working with manager Ruben Amorim: "This is a very special day for my whole family. I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim. His vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting." He believes that Manchester United offers the ideal environment for achieving his ambitions.
The young defender’s move signifies an important step in his career as he joins one of England’s top clubs. With high expectations placed upon him by both fans and management alike, Dorgu aims to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford while continuing his development under Amorim’s guidance.
