Patrik Schick struck twice in quick succession as Bayer Leverkusen beat Olympiacos 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off. The brace secured a valuable away advantage and delivered Leverkusen’s first-ever knockout-stage win on the road in this competition.
Leverkusen’s goals both arrived in the second half, turning a tight contest in the visitors’ favour. Schick’s double came within three minutes, punishing Olympiacos during a period when the hosts appeared in control and the home crowd were driving the team forward.

The breakthrough came around the hour mark after a swift Leverkusen move. Ernest Poku threaded a pass through for Schick, who escaped Giulian Biancone’s challenge and guided a low finish into the bottom-left corner, giving goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis little chance from inside the penalty area.
Leverkusen’s lead doubled only 144 seconds later from a set piece. The visitors forced a corner, and Alejandro Grimaldo swung in a dangerous in-swinging delivery. Schick met the cross with a deft flick, sending the ball beyond defenders on the line as Olympiacos supporters were left silent.
The first half featured chances at both ends, with Olympiacos starting strongly. Mehdi Taremi shot wide early, while at the other end Tzolakis reacted sharply to block a close-range effort from Schick. The match moved from area to area, with neither side able to take control.
Olympiacos briefly believed they had grabbed the opener shortly before half-time. Ayoub El Kaabi headed towards goal, but the ball deflected in off Taremi, who stood in an offside position. Earlier in the half, Ibrahim Maza saw one powerful strike tipped onto the crossbar by the Leverkusen goalkeeper.
The statistical picture underlined Leverkusen’s efficiency in the Champions League play-off. Olympiacos attempted 13 shots to Leverkusen’s eight, yet the Bundesliga side produced higher expected goals, with 1.95 xG compared with 0.87. The visitors created fewer efforts but generated the clearer openings across the ninety minutes.
Schick’s current Champions League form continued an upward trend for Bayer Leverkusen. Schick now has four goals in the last six matches in the tournament, after scoring only once in the first 28 appearances. Schick is also the second Leverkusen player with a knockout brace, following Michael Ballack against Liverpool in 2001-02.
