Portugal defender Pepe has announced his retirement from professional football, concluding a distinguished 23-year career. The 41-year-old played 878 matches for both club and country, amassing 34 trophies. Much of his success came during his tenure at Real Madrid.
Pepe began his career with Porto before transferring to Real Madrid in 2007. At Madrid, he formed a formidable defensive partnership with Sergio Ramos. During his decade with Los Blancos, he secured 12 honours, including three Champions League titles. Afterward, he spent a season in Turkey with Besiktas before returning to Porto, where he made an additional 132 appearances and won nine more trophies.

On the international stage, Pepe was instrumental in Portugal's Euro 2016 victory, playing in all but one of their seven games. He earned 141 caps for Portugal, ranking third on the all-time list behind Joao Moutinho (146) and Cristiano Ronaldo (212). His final match was Portugal's penalty shootout loss to France at Euro 2024, where he became the oldest player to feature in a European Championship.
In a video shared on Instagram, Pepe expressed gratitude: "I want to thank God for giving me the wisdom to be able to continue my journey. I can't help but thank all the presidents who bet on me and believed in me."
"All the employees of all the clubs I've been to, they are the soul and essence. And of the national team. All my teammates and coaches, who helped me grow and compete every day," he added.
"All the fans, who are the soul of football. To Jorge Mendes, to GestiFute, to my mother, who was essential in my journey by letting me fly towards my dream, which was to be a professional footballer," Pepe continued.
"To all my friends and family, especially my wife, who was my home in my absence. My children for believing in me, for being a fundamental support in my life," he said.
"For supporting me when I left home to play. They were the support I needed to be able to go with a clear conscience," Pepe concluded.
Pepe's illustrious career is marked by numerous achievements both at club level and internationally. His contributions have left an indelible mark on football history.
