Peru Footballer Dies in Freak Lightning Strike During Local Match, Sparking Calls for Safety Measures

A tragic incident struck the world of football as 39-year-old Peruvian player José Hugo de la Cruz Meza lost his life due to a lightning strike during a local league match in Huancayo, Peru. The match, held in the Chilca district, took an unexpected turn when lightning struck.

Five players were injured and de la Cruz, who was playing as a defender for Juventud Bellavista against Familia Chocca lost his life. The incident was captured on video and broadcasted by local station Onda Deportiva Huancavelic, showing the chilling moment lightning struck the Coto Coto stadium field.

As a thunderstorm approached, the game was paused just 22 minutes in, with Bellavista leading 2-0. Suddenly, a lightning bolt hit the field, sending at least eight players to the ground. A small spark and smoke cloud were visible near the area where de la Cruz collapsed, reportedly after he was struck directly.

De la Cruz was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite emergency efforts, he was declared dead shortly after arrival. The goalkeeper, Juan Chocca Llacta, aged 40, suffered severe burns and remains in critical condition. Two other players injured in the incident have since been discharged.

Two others remain under medical observation, according to the Peruvian news agency Andina. The tragic event has prompted a local outpouring of support. In a public statement, the Huancayo municipality expressed condolences to the family of de la Cruz and extended well-wishes to the injured players.

"We join in solidarity and extend our sincere condolences," the statement read. "We also express our support and wishes for a speedy recovery to the other four players injured in this tragic accident." The incident has raised concerns over safety at sports events.

Especially in high-altitude areas like Huancayo, which frequently experience thunderstorms during monsoon seasons. The tragic event recalls previous similar incidents globally, including the death of a 30-year-old Indonesian footballer earlier this year and a lightning incident 25 years ago in the Democratic Republic of Congo that claimed 11 lives.

Authorities and sports organizations are now under increased pressure to implement improved safety measures for players. Experts highlight the rare but dangerous nature of lightning strikes, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noting that while survival rates are high, lightning strikes can cause severe long-term injuries, including burns, seizures, and memory loss.
