Phil Foden Named PFA Player Of The Year, Touted As England's Best Ever

Phil Foden has been hailed by Rodri as a potential future legend for England after being named the PFA Players' Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season. This accolade comes on top of the Premier League Player of the Season award he secured in May, following his instrumental role in Manchester City's fourth consecutive league title.

In the 2023-24 season, Foden scored 19 goals and provided eight assists, including crucial hat-tricks against Brentford and Aston Villa. His stunning goal on the final day against West Ham was also pivotal. Rodri, who was unbeaten in all 34 of his Premier League appearances last season, praised Foden's achievement.

"I'm so, so happy about Phil. To be honest he's a very good kid, a very shy kid. For me, he has the ability to be the best English player in history when he finishes his career," Rodri said at Tuesday's award ceremony. He added that Foden needs to maintain his high level of performance and believes he can improve even further.

Foden is the first Englishman to win the PFA Player's Player of the Year award since Wayne Rooney in 2010. He is also the first to achieve this honour in the same year as winning the Premier League title since John Terry in 2005.

Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland, who joined Rodri and Foden in being voted into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, also praised Foden. "He's a great guy, I really enjoy playing with him and joking with him," Haaland said. "Phil is unbelievable, some of the stuff he does in training that no one sees is also incredible, I'm lucky to play with him."

Rodri emphasised Foden's hard work and dedication: "The quality, ambition and hard work he has every day listening to old people like me is very important." He noted that last season was particularly outstanding for Foden as it was the first time he saw him carrying the team on his back.

Rodri's admiration for Foden extends beyond his skills on the pitch. He highlighted Foden's humility and eagerness to learn from more experienced players. "He was outstanding last season and it's the first season I saw him carrying the team on his back," Rodri remarked.

The recognition from both teammates underscores Foden's exceptional talent and potential for future greatness. As he continues to develop, many will be watching to see if he can indeed become one of England's greatest-ever players.
