Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear to his United States players that they cannot decide when to be available for national duty. This statement follows Christian Pulisic's comments about wanting to play in two friendly matches despite needing rest before the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Pulisic expressed his desire to participate in the USA's friendlies against Turkiye and Switzerland during an interview with CBS Sports.
The USA faced defeats in both matches, losing 2-1 to Turkiye and suffering a 4-0 loss to Switzerland. These results extended their losing streak to four games, marking the first time since June 1988 that they have lost four consecutive home matches. Pulisic, who has earned 78 caps and scored 32 goals for his country, was not included in these games as Pochettino aimed for a consistent squad ahead of the tournament.

Pulisic respected but did not fully understand Pochettino's decision to exclude him from the friendlies. He acknowledged the coach's choice but expressed his confusion over not being selected. Despite this, he maintained respect for the decision made by the coaching staff.
Pochettino addressed these concerns on Saturday, emphasizing that it is his responsibility, not the players', to decide squad selections. "Players [do] not need to understand or not understand," he stated. "Players need to listen and stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan."
Pochettino further explained that it was crucial for him to communicate why certain decisions were made regarding player inclusion in friendly matches. He stressed that any issues arising from these decisions are not his concern as head coach. "I am the head coach; I am not a mannequin," he asserted, highlighting his authority over team matters.
By maintaining a consistent squad, Pochettino aims to prepare effectively for upcoming tournaments. His approach underscores the importance of strategic planning and adherence to team objectives over individual preferences.
The situation highlights the balance between player desires and coaching strategies in international football. As teams prepare for major tournaments, decisions like these become pivotal in shaping team dynamics and performance.
