Paul Pogba aims to play for France in the 2026 World Cup after joining Monaco. The club anticipates a three-month wait before his competitive debut. Pogba recently signed a two-year contract with the Ligue 1 team, following his release from Juventus in November 2024. His contract ended after receiving a four-year suspension for failing an anti-doping test, later reduced to 18 months on appeal.
Pogba's last game for Juventus was a 2-0 victory over Empoli in Serie A in September 2023. Monaco shared footage of the emotional moment when the 32-year-old signed his contract. Reflecting on this, Pogba expressed, "I was overwhelmed with emotion at that moment. I must say that it's very rare to see me cry like that, so I hope you enjoyed it!"

During his unveiling, Pogba shared his joy and determination about joining Monaco. He said, "To come back and sign for AS Monaco, for a club that believed in me... all of that came back to me at the moment of my signing, which meant that I couldn't hold back. But above all, it was a moment of joy! I also feel a lot of determination in me, and I think I made the best choice in coming here."
Pogba mentioned he saw no reason why he couldn't participate in Monaco's Ligue 1 opener against Le Havre on August 17. However, sporting director Thiago Scuro believes more time is needed for him to regain full fitness. Scuro stated, "I can guarantee you that Paul won't be able to play against Le Havre. He must have been joking."
Scuro explained that they expect a three-month rehabilitation period for Pogba. He emphasised the intensity required at high-level sport and noted Monaco's demanding style of play in Ligue 1 and Europe. "Our players have to be very fit to be on the pitch," Scuro added.
If Pogba returns to form, Scuro sees potential for him to join Didier Deschamps' squad for the next World Cup. Scuro remarked on Pogba's motivation: "He has the desire to play at the next World Cup... He wants his kids to see him playing at the top level."
Pogba's ambition extends beyond personal goals; he wishes to inspire his children by performing at an elite level again. Scuro highlighted this as a significant motivator for Pogba: "He wants to build his image for his kids also—this was a very, very important trigger that we also found—and again, he's a top athlete, top player."
