Michal Probierz, the manager of Poland's national football team, stepped down on Thursday. His resignation followed a dispute over his decision to replace Robert Lewandowski as team captain. Lewandowski, Poland's top scorer with 85 goals in 158 matches, announced he would not play for the national team while Probierz remained in charge.
Probierz's choice to appoint Piotr Zielinski of Inter as captain instead of Lewandowski came during recent matches against Moldova and Finland. Lewandowski cited both physical and mental exhaustion as reasons for his unavailability during this international window. The Barcelona forward's absence was notable in these fixtures.

Poland faced a setback with a 2-1 defeat to Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. This result left them third in Group G after three games. Probierz decided that resigning was the best course of action for the team's benefit. "I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach," he stated.
Probierz expressed that leading Poland was a dream fulfilled and an honour. He took over from Fernando Santos in 2023 and led Poland to Euro 2024, where they were eliminated first. Under his leadership, Poland played 21 matches, winning nine, drawing five, and losing seven.
The decision to replace Lewandowski as captain stirred controversy within Polish football circles. His influence on the team is significant, given his record as their all-time top scorer. The change in leadership might have impacted team morale and performance during crucial qualifiers.
Probierz thanked all players he worked with during his tenure. "Thank you, of course, to all the footballers I have had the pleasure of meeting along the way," he said. He expressed hope for their future success, emphasizing that the national team is a shared national treasure.
This leadership change comes at a critical time for Poland as they navigate World Cup qualifiers without their star player and former captain actively participating under Probierz's management.
