In the first quarter-final of Euro 2024, two former champions Portugal and France will face each other at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany on Friday (July 5).
The clash will be a replay of their last knock-out face-off, the final of Euro 2016, where the Selecao beat the French to lift their maiden trophy. Despite being a favourite to lift the trophy, France failed to top the group, though Portugal managed to win their group but they are goalless in two consecutive matches.

France won only one match in Group D against Austria and drew the other two matches against Netherlands and Poland. In the Round of 16, Les Bleus managed to clinch a victory by the slightest margin against Belgium, thanks to a deflected attempt by Kolo Muani.
Whereas after a good start, with two back-to-back wins against Czechia and Turkiye, they had to face a shocking 2-0 defeat against Georgia. In the Round of 16, the Selecaos remained goalless against Slovenia and won the match through a penalty shootout.
These two European football giants will meet in three consecutive Euros, including the upcoming clash. France has an overwhelming dominance in their past head-to-head records but in the last four matches, Les Bleus won only two and drew the others. The last time Portugal defeated France was in the Euro 2016 Final.
Despite having some of the best forwards in their squad, both the teams have underperformed in this Euro. France has scored only three goals so far, two are deflected and one from a penalty. Portugal, on the other hand, seems to have suddenly lost their attacking prowess for the last two matches.
Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to score a goal in this Euro, despite having the maximum number of attempts. The heroic brilliance of Diogo Costa has rescued Roberto Martinez's team in the pre-quarterfinal, but to prevent star-studded France, Portugal will need the magic of Ronaldo.
A similar lacklustre display by the French forwards including Kylian Mbappe could hamper the expectation of an enthralling encounter. Among this plethora of misfired attempts on goal, defences of the both teams are shown their resolutes in the crucial moments.
