Portsmouth Stuns Leeds United With Colby Bishop's Late Strike In Championship Clash

In a surprising turn of events, Portsmouth defeated Leeds United 1-0, ending their unbeaten streak. Colby Bishop's goal secured crucial points for Portsmouth, while Leeds faced pressure from rivals Sheffield United and Burnley.

Leeds United faced a setback in their Championship campaign, losing 1-0 to Portsmouth on Sunday. This defeat prevented them from maintaining a three-point lead at the top of the table. Daniel Farke's team felt the pressure after Sheffield United and Burnley won on Saturday, with Sheffield United drawing level with Leeds and Burnley closing in within two points.

Colby Bishop's goal just past the hour mark was crucial for Portsmouth, moving them 10 points clear of relegation. This marked Leeds' first league defeat since November. Despite having a strong unbeaten run of 17 games, Leeds couldn't capitalise on their chances during this match.

Portsmouth Defeats Leeds United 1-0

In the 10th minute, Leeds might have had a penalty when Matt Ritchie appeared to foul Dan James in the box, but referee Rob Jones did not award it. Both teams struggled to create opportunities in the first half. Nicolas Schmid was vital for Portsmouth, making a double save from Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe to keep it goalless before halftime.

Piroe missed a significant chance early in the second half, shooting over an open goal after Solomon set him up perfectly. This miss proved costly as Bishop later scored for Portsmouth, taking advantage of Illan Meslier's indecision to score with a clever finish.

Junior Firpo came close to equalising for Leeds but saw his shot blocked by Schmid. Firpo also hit the crossbar with a header, and Dan James failed to convert the rebound. Josh Murphy nearly doubled Portsmouth's lead when he hit the post from distance.

In stoppage time, Schmid made another crucial save by tipping Sam Byram's header over the bar, ensuring Portsmouth kept their clean sheet intact. This defensive resilience has been key to Portsmouth's recent success at Fratton Park.

Leeds' Unbeaten Streak Ends

Before this match, Leeds were on an impressive unbeaten streak of 17 league games (12 wins and five draws). This was their best run since they went 30 games unbeaten under Don Revie between 1973 and 1974 when they won the First Division title.

Portsmouth have turned Fratton Park into a stronghold recently, winning nine of their last 12 home Championship matches (two draws and one loss). This is a significant improvement after failing to win any of their first six home games this season (three draws and three losses).

The loss against Portsmouth highlights areas where Leeds need improvement if they are to regain their position at the top of the Championship table. They will need to regroup quickly as they aim to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
