Portsmouth 1-1 Southampton: Adams Equalises In South Coast Derby

Portsmouth and Southampton drew 1-1 at Fratton Park as Ebou Adams scored his first Pompey goal to level after Leo Scienza's opener. Pompey defended well late on, earning a point that lifts them from relegation trouble and extends their unbeaten run against Southampton at home.

Portsmouth moved out of the Championship relegation places after a 1-1 draw with rivals Southampton at Fratton Park, with Ebou Adams scoring late. The equaliser, 13 minutes from the end, cancelled out Leo Scienza’s earlier opener and lifted John Mousinho’s side one point above 22nd-placed Blackburn Rovers.

The South Coast derby stayed level despite heavy late pressure from Portsmouth, who had trailed from the 57th minute. Scienza finished calmly to give Tonda Eckert’s Southampton the lead, but Adams’ first Portsmouth goal secured a point and extended an impressive unbeaten run against their near neighbours.

Portsmouth created more than enough to feel a victory was possible, finishing ahead on most key metrics. Mousinho’s side produced 14 attempts to Southampton’s six and also led the expected goals numbers by 1.66 xG to 1.11. That attacking edge helped maintain momentum in the fight against relegation.

This South Coast derby added another chapter to a growing sequence in Portsmouth’s favour. The teams had not met in a league match at Fratton Park since December 2011, when it also ended 1-1 in the Championship. Portsmouth are now unbeaten in five home games against Southampton, with two wins and three draws.

Across all recent South Coast derbies, Portsmouth are unbeaten in five, recording one victory and four draws. That run is Portsmouth’s longest without defeat against Southampton in Football League competition. The latest draw also continued Southampton’s wait for a league away win at Fratton Park in the modern era.

Portsmouth began on the front foot, yet Southampton carved out the clearer openings before half-time. Adam Armstrong twice forced strong saves from Nicolas Schmid. Soon after the restart, Finn Azaz sent Scienza through and the forward clipped the ball neatly over Schmid to finish a swift counter-attack.

Portsmouth answered when Adrian Segecic’s corner struck a Southampton player, looped up, and dropped invitingly inside the six-yard box. Adams, who joined from Derby County last week, reacted first and stabbed the ball in from close range. Six added minutes followed, with home supporters urging a winner that never arrived.

The match finished with Portsmouth gaining both a valuable point and further confidence against a long-standing rival. The draw nudged Mousinho’s team out of the bottom three, extended their derby sequence, and left Southampton still searching for better rewards away from home in high-pressure Championship fixtures.
