Portugal World Cup Contenders, Not Favourites, Veiga Declares Ahead Of Tournament

Renato Veiga insists Portugal arrive at the World Cup as serious challengers, yet not favourites. The Villarreal defender points to high expectations, especially with the Opta model giving Roberto Martinez's team a 7% title chance, the fifth-best prediction, but still stresses that external numbers do not change the squad’s mindset.

Reflecting on Portugal’s internal mood, Veiga underlines unity and humility inside the camp. "There's no denying Portugal's quality, the Villarreal centre-back said on Monday. We are contenders, not favourites. For now, we are just contenders." The comments frame Portugal as ambitious, while keeping attention on performance rather than predictions or reputations.

Portugal Contenders, Not Favourites, Veiga Says

Portugal travel with a 26-man squad that blends major tournament experience and strong recent form. Cristiano Ronaldo captains the side and is set for a sixth World Cup appearance, an unprecedented landmark for Portugal. Veiga previously lifted the Nations League with Portugal last year, adding another layer of international experience to the current group.

Creative responsibility again falls on Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who enters the tournament after an outstanding domestic season. Fernandes set a new Premier League single-season assists record, registering 21 in 2025-26. That production reinforces Fernandes’ status as Portugal’s main playmaker and one of Martinez’s most reliable attacking options in North America.

Several Portugal players arrive as recent European champions at club level. Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos all helped Paris Saint-Germain retain both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Veiga believes that shared success shapes the squad’s mentality, providing confidence for high-pressure matches at the World Cup this summer.

Veiga also emphasises Portugal’s team spirit and competitive edge. "I think our locker room is our greatest asset, Veiga added. The atmosphere is very good, with great people, and it helps us express our best on the field. Whoever plays will certainly give his best. Of course, there's always competition within the group, but the real competition is out there, with our opponents."

Portugal’s schedule in North America begins on June 17 against DR Congo in Group K. Uzbekistan and Colombia complete the group, presenting varied tactical challenges. Martinez’s team play one final warm-up on Wednesday against Nigeria, following a 2-1 friendly win over Chile that included Rafael Leao’s dismissal.

Past World Cups show both promise and frustration for Portugal. The team has never lifted the trophy, with the best finish being third in England in 1966. Portugal exited in the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago, and now approach this edition accepting contender status while aiming to progress deeper into the tournament.
