Portugal World Cup Preparation Gains Momentum After Chile Win, Martinez Says
Portugal continued an unbeaten World Cup build-up with a 2-1 victory over Chile that also doubled as a test of discipline and resilience. The win followed a 0-0 draw with Mexico and a 2-0 success against the United States, as Roberto Martinez finalised preparations for the World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17.
The friendly at Estadio Nacional turned chaotic in first-half stoppage-time when both teams had a player dismissed. Rafael Leao received a red card for violent conduct, while Chile’s Ivan Roman was also sent off following the same confrontation in Lisbon, leaving both sides to play the second half with ten players.

Before the dismissals, Portugal had already taken control on the scoreboard. Goncalo Guedes struck for the hosts and Bruno Fernandes added another goal, giving Martinez’s team enough of an edge to secure the 2-1 result, even after the match opened up with extra space and more direct duels.
Martinez highlighted that the match scenario mirrors situations often seen against South American opposition, which may prove valuable when Portugal face Colombia in the group phase. Portugal will also meet Uzbekistan, alongside DR Congo and Colombia, in a group that Martinez expects to be physically and tactically demanding across all three fixtures.
After the final whistle, Martinez underlined both the positives and the areas needing refinement from the Chile test. "I liked many things, said Martinez after the win over Chile.
Martinez explained why the red cards could still help. "First, as we discussed earlier, in the World Cup we have to be prepared for surprises. The red card forced us to play with ten men against ten, with more space and more duels. It's very good that it happened now, because South American teams are used to that kind of thing. We're going to face Colombia, and it could happen."
He also stressed that the performance showed progress, even with imperfections. "There were some very good aspects and others that weren't so good. Overall, what we showed as a team, we're starting to gel, and we won a match despite the surprise of playing with ten men in the second half."
Portugal’s preparation schedule now shifts from friendlies to full focus on competitive action, with Martinez encouraged by three warm-up games without defeat and by how the side coped with adversity against Chile. The coaching staff will now refine details for DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia, using the Chile match as a key tactical reference.
