Ange Postecoglou has expressed no concern over players' egos following his remarks on Timo Werner's subpar performance against Rangers. Tottenham managed a 1-1 draw at Ibrox Stadium in the Europa League, but Werner was substituted at halftime after losing possession 16 times. Only Pedro Porro lost possession more frequently, with 20 instances. Dejan Kulusevski replaced Werner and scored the equaliser.
Postecoglou clarified that his comments were not criticism but an evaluation of Werner's performance. "He’s an international, he’s won the Champions League, he’s a senior player," Postecoglou stated. He emphasised the need for senior players to elevate their game, especially given the team's injury struggles. "There’s a level of application you need to rise to, to raise the team."

Tottenham have endured a challenging season, losing 14 out of 33 Premier League games in 2024. This is just one loss fewer than their total from 42 games in 2023. They last experienced consecutive years with over 15 league losses in the early 2000s. Spurs have only one win in their last eight matches across all competitions.
The team is currently missing key players like Cristian Romero and Richarlison due to injuries. Despite this, Postecoglou remains committed to his playing style and expects his squad to adapt during this challenging period. "This football club, we want to achieve things," he said, acknowledging the limited player availability.
Postecoglou stressed that it's not about blaming individuals like Timo Werner for the team's struggles. Instead, he seeks players who are ready for the challenge despite limited resources. "If there’s somebody in the dressing room who’s fit who feels he needs something extra in this moment, he’s probably not the right type," Postecoglou remarked.
The upcoming match against Southampton presents another opportunity for Tottenham to improve their form. The team aims to overcome recent setbacks and regain momentum as they continue their campaign amidst ongoing challenges.
Despite recent results putting pressure on him, Postecoglou remains focused on achieving success with Tottenham. He believes that those unwilling to give extra effort during tough times may not fit within his vision for the team.
