Ange Postecoglou defended his Tottenham players, acknowledging their recent struggles were understandable. Tottenham lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, placing them 11th in the league, 10 points from the top four. Despite having over 65% possession for the seventh time this season, they have lost five of those matches. Their inconsistency is evident as they beat both Manchester clubs but dropped points against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth.
Postecoglou's team has been plagued by defensive injuries, with Radu Dragusin substituted late due to another issue. Djed Spence's red card means he will miss their next match against Wolves, who recently defeated Manchester United 2-0. "We are asking a lot of this group of players," Postecoglou stated. "It's only logical they are not going to be at their sharpest, but they are trying."

Despite the defeat, Postecoglou saw positives in his team's performance. He noted that Tottenham created several good moments but failed to capitalise on them. The opposing goalkeeper made crucial saves that kept Forest in the game. "We needed a goal to break them open," he said, expressing disappointment at not finding the net.
Forest's victory over Tottenham propelled them to third place in the Premier League standings. This marks their first four-game winning streak in the league since May 1995 and ends a six-game losing streak against Tottenham. Nuno Espirito Santo, however, remains grounded despite their impressive start to the season.
Forest managed only 29.6% possession against Tottenham, their lowest in a home game this season. It's also the second time they've won with such low possession, having done so against Manchester United earlier this term. Despite being outperformed in expected goals (xG), with Spurs registering 1.28 xG compared to Forest's 1.21 from fewer shots, Forest's teamwork shone through.
Nuno highlighted his team's unity as a key factor in their success this season. "Our main strength is the bond they have," he explained. "The way they help each other in every moment." He praised the impact of substitutes and emphasised the importance of team spirit and collective effort.
Tottenham's inconsistency has been a significant hurdle this season, as seen in their mixed results against top teams and lower-ranked sides alike. Postecoglou acknowledged that while effort is there, results have not always followed suit. "The boys are giving everything," he said. "I can't ask for more."
As Tottenham look ahead to future matches, addressing defensive issues and maintaining player fitness will be crucial for improving their standing in the league table. Meanwhile, Forest aims to build on their strong start by continuing to leverage their team cohesion and tactical discipline.
Both teams face challenges ahead but remain focused on achieving their respective goals for the season without getting carried away by recent outcomes or performances on the pitch.
