Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, has called for greater respect towards Premier League managers amid ongoing criticism of his team's playing style. Despite sitting 10th in the league with seven wins, two draws, and seven losses from 16 matches, Postecoglou's attacking strategy has been both entertaining and contentious. His position has been questioned by some fans and pundits due to inconsistent results.
Tottenham's recent victory over Manchester United in the EFL Cup quarter-finals ended with a thrilling 4-3 scoreline. This season, Spurs have scored three or more goals in nine different matches. Across all competitions, they have netted 55 goals and conceded 31 in 25 games. Among Europe's top five leagues, only Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Stuttgart have seen more goals in their matches than Tottenham's 86.

After the win against Manchester United, Postecoglou expressed his enjoyment of Spurs' chaotic performance to Sky Sports. He feels that criticism of his methods has sometimes been excessive. "You kind of feel that 26 years of hard graft should get you a little more respect," he stated at a press conference before facing Liverpool on Sunday. He noted similar treatment towards Unai Emery during his Arsenal tenure and Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher described Tottenham as the most entertaining team in the Premier League but also criticised them as naive. He pointed out Postecoglou's reluctance to adjust tactics based on game situations after nearly losing a 3-0 lead against United. When asked about Carragher's remarks, Postecoglou responded positively: "People tell me he likes me so that's a good thing."
Postecoglou acknowledged that opinions about his playing style vary widely but emphasised that differing views are healthy. "I get that not everyone will be a fan of the way I do things," he said. He appreciates discussions surrounding their games but insists he doesn't need external validation for his approach. "Whether you agree with my approach or not, there is validity in both," he added.
Tottenham's record against Liverpool is less impressive; they have won only two out of their last 23 Premier League encounters with them, drawing six and losing 15. However, they secured a controversial 2-1 victory over Liverpool at home last September. A win this weekend could mark consecutive home league victories against Liverpool for the first time since achieving five straight wins between 2008 and 2012.
Despite mixed results this season, Postecoglou remains committed to his philosophy and welcomes analysis of their performances. His focus is on maintaining an exciting brand of football while striving for consistency in results.
