Ange Postecoglou praised Tottenham's resilience after they overcame challenges to secure a late victory against Liverpool. Spurs clinched a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, with Lucas Bergvall scoring in the 86th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite the win, Rodrigo Bentancur's early injury cast a shadow over the triumph.
Bentancur collapsed unchallenged in Liverpool's penalty area and required extensive medical attention before being stretchered off. He was conscious and taken to hospital for further evaluation. "Obviously I don't have all the information but my understanding is he is conscious and they've taken him to hospital to get checked," Postecoglou told Sky Sports about Bentancur's condition.

Radu Dragusin nearly scored shortly after Bentancur's injury, but Alisson saved his close-range attempt. Brennan Johnson replaced Bentancur, adding to Spurs' injury woes. Postecoglou had mentioned before the match that he was missing 10 first-team players. Despite these setbacks, he expressed pride in his team's performance.
"We're having to deal with adversity all the time," Postecoglou remarked. "We started the game awfully well, and almost scored just before [the Bentancur injury]. Then we lose a key player in those kinds of circumstances." He highlighted his players' resilience and determination despite facing numerous challenges.
Postecoglou noted that young players stepped up during the match, playing out of position. "It's incredible when you think that we've got a couple of 18-year-olds out there playing out of position," he said. A left-back who isn't a left-back and a goalkeeper making his debut contributed significantly to their efforts.
Tottenham has maintained an unbeaten record in their seven EFL Cup semi-final first legs played at home. This victory brings them closer to facing either Newcastle United or Arsenal in the final. However, Postecoglou acknowledged that their task is far from over as they prepare for the return leg at Anfield next month.
"It is only half-time and going to Liverpool is not easy but just that feeling of having a victory against a really strong opponent I want the players to feel good about it," Postecoglou continued. He remains optimistic despite references to always winning a trophy in his second season at clubs.
The former Celtic manager concluded by addressing scepticism about his track record: "People can keep mocking me about it but we will see." His confidence reflects his belief in his team's potential as they aim for success this season.
