Postecoglou Affirms Confidence In Second-Season Trophy Claims Amid Tottenham's Europa League Challenge

Ange Postecoglou stands by his assertion of winning trophies in his second season at clubs as Tottenham seeks to advance in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou remains confident in his assertion that he typically secures a trophy during his second season at a club. Tottenham Hotspur is currently aiming to overturn a deficit in the Europa League. Last Thursday, Spurs suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar, with Lucas Bergvall's own goal being the decisive factor.

Spurs have been eliminated from both the EFL Cup and FA Cup and are positioned 13th in the Premier League. This leaves the Europa League as their sole chance for silverware this season. Their last trophy win was the EFL Cup in 2008. In September, Postecoglou mentioned his track record of winning titles in his second seasons with clubs like Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F Marinos, and Celtic.

Postecoglou Confident in Second-Season Claims

When asked if he regretted his bold statement, Postecoglou clarified that he was merely stating a fact without adding pressure on his players. "No, no extra pressure," he insisted. He acknowledged that every game is significant in European or cup competitions as it determines progression or elimination.

Postecoglou explained that when questioned, he simply answered truthfully without making any exaggerated claims. He noted that people might interpret his words differently based on circumstances but maintained that he was just stating facts. "If that doesn't happen this year, then I cannot say that anymore if I'm asked next year," he added.

Tottenham has a strong record against Dutch teams at home, winning four of their last five European matches against them. The only loss was a 1-0 defeat to Ajax in April 2019 during the Champions League. Additionally, Spurs have scored in their last 29 home Europa League matches, marking the longest scoring streak on home ground in the competition's history.

Their last goalless home match was against Lazio in September 2012. This scoring consistency bodes well for Spurs as they need at least one goal to stay alive in the tie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday.

Focus on Performance

A reporter suggested that this match could be crucial for Postecoglou's future at Tottenham, which did not sit well with him. "There aren't many professions where you have to answer questions like that," he remarked politely. He emphasised their focus on winning Thursday's game and improving upon their previous performance.

Reflecting on their recent match, Postecoglou admitted it fell short of expectations but remained optimistic about their chances if they maintain high intensity and tempo similar to their weekend performance.

Whether Postecoglou can achieve success in his second season with Tottenham remains uncertain. However, his commitment to improving performances and embracing challenges is evident as they strive for victory in the Europa League.
