Premier League MD8: Liverpool's Victory And Newcastle's Misfortune Highlight Weekend Matches

The Premier League MD8 featured thrilling matches with Liverpool securing a win over Chelsea while Newcastle faced disappointment against Brighton. Key metrics reveal the contrasting fortunes of teams this weekend.

The Premier League resumed with thrilling matches, featuring 28 goals, five red cards, and two last-minute winners. Tottenham triumphed over West Ham in a London derby, while Leicester City staged a comeback against Southampton. Aston Villa maintained their top-four chase by defeating Fulham 3-1. Manchester United overturned a deficit to beat Brentford, and Everton extended their unbeaten streak by overcoming Ipswich Town.

Arsenal suffered their first loss of the season at Bournemouth after William Saliba's red card. Liverpool stayed atop the league by defeating Chelsea in an exciting match at Anfield. Meanwhile, Manchester City closely pursued them, needing a late John Stones header to edge past Wolves. The weekend's action left some teams feeling fortunate and others less so.

Liverpool Triumphs While Newcastle Struggles in MD8

Newcastle United's struggles continued as they lost 1-0 to Brighton at St. James' Park, courtesy of Danny Welbeck's goal. Despite this setback, Newcastle had an expected goals (xG) total of 2.02, surpassed only by Southampton and Leicester City during the weekend fixtures. They managed 21 shots but only six were on target.

Newcastle had more attempts inside the box than Brighton and recorded 45 touches in the opposition area, second only to Manchester City's 85 on matchday eight. Brighton was more efficient with their chances, achieving an xG of 1.12 from ten attempts and relying on Bart Verbruggen's six saves.

Liverpool secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Chelsea under Arne Slot's guidance, marking one of his toughest challenges yet. Despite having an xG of 1.94 compared to Chelsea's 0.99, it was Enzo Maresca's team that posed significant threats with 12 shots, though only two tested Caoimhin Kelleher.

Chelsea had more shots inside the box than Liverpool and registered more touches in the opposition area and final third entries. Jadon Sancho believed he deserved a penalty for a clash with Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Nicolas Jackson hit the woodwork before halftime.

Unlucky Losers: Fulham

Fulham returned from the international break with another strong showing but fell short against Aston Villa after previously challenging Manchester City. Morgan Rogers equalised Raul Jiminez's opener before Andreas Pereira missed a penalty due to Emiliano Martinez's save.

Fulham had an xG of 1.78 compared to Villa's 1.68 but were undone by Ollie Watkins' goal and Issa Diop's own goal. Marco Silva's side created four big chances but failed to convert any, managing only four shots on target out of ten attempts at Craven Cottage.

The weekend showcased intense competition as teams battled for crucial points in the Premier League standings.
