Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended pending investigation following the release of a controversial video where he allegedly makes abusive comments about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp.
The video, which quickly went viral, seems to capture Coote expressing his apparent disdain toward the club and its manager in a profanity-laden tirade. This incident has sparked an investigation by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for overseeing refereeing standards in English football.

In a statement, PGMOL announced that Coote has been suspended from officiating duties with immediate effect while they conduct a thorough review of the video. “David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation,” the statement said. “PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete.”
Amid the uproar, some have questioned the authenticity of the footage, speculating about the possible use of artificial intelligence to manipulate it. Experts have yet to verify whether the recording is genuine or doctored, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
David Coote, a 42-year-old referee from Nottinghamshire, has been a fixture in the English game since joining the Football League referee ranks in 2010. He made his Premier League debut in 2018, and since then, has officiated over 100 top-flight games, gaining a reputation as a diligent, if occasionally controversial, official.
Notably, his most recent Premier League assignment was Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, adding an ironic twist to the timing of this video release.
If the footage is proven genuine, the comments attributed to Coote indicate a lingering resentment tied to an unspecified incident with Klopp, possibly during a match when Coote served as the fourth official.
While the precise details are unclear, the alleged remarks appear to reflect deep frustration and highlight a perceived animosity towards Klopp, which, if true, would call into question Coote’s impartiality in officiating Liverpool games.
Although online speculations have linked Coote to a supposed allegiance to Manchester United, PGMOL has stated that the referee supports Notts County, a League Two team, thus barring him only from officiating games involving Notts County and Nottingham Forest.
However, as PGMOL examines the video and its implications, this situation highlights the increased scrutiny that referees face and raises questions about standards of conduct for officials at the highest levels of the game.
