The Premier League has turned down Manchester City's appeal to delay the start of their 2025-26 season. This request was made to allow players more recovery time after participating in the Club World Cup. As winners of the 2022-23 Champions League, City, along with Chelsea, have qualified for FIFA's inaugural 32-team Club World Cup in the United States next year.
The expanded format of this tournament has sparked significant controversy. Critics argue it deprives players of essential rest during the off-season. The players' union, Fifpro, has initiated legal action against FIFA, claiming that the tournament's schedule is impractical and burdensome.

The Club World Cup is scheduled from June 15 to July 13. Players involved are unlikely to get much rest before the domestic season kicks off in early August. This tight schedule has raised concerns about player fatigue and well-being.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City's manager, expressed his frustration ahead of their Premier League match against Fulham. He revealed that their request to postpone their opening game was denied. "The Premier League has not allowed us to postpone the first two games for our recovery," Guardiola stated.
Guardiola further elaborated on the situation by saying, "I think the club asked the league to postpone one or two or three weeks so we can have a holiday after the [Club] World Cup but it is absolutely not allowed." He questioned whether the Premier League would accommodate their request and concluded with a firm "No."
The refusal to adjust the schedule leaves City in a challenging position. Guardiola acknowledged that they must make decisions based on common sense as they navigate this demanding period without an immediate solution.
