PSG's Champions League Journey Reflects Correct Mindset, According To Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique emphasises the significance of mindset in PSG's Champions League success. He credits player transformation and dedicated training for their recent performance improvements.

Paris Saint-Germain's head coach, Luis Enrique, commended his team for maintaining the right mindset in their 3-1 aggregate win over Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final. The Spanish coach highlighted his own journey of learning to control his emotions to set a positive example for his players. "If I showed my emotions, I'd be sent off every match," he stated. "A volcano on the sidelines is a disaster for the team."

Earlier in the season, PSG faced challenges in the Champions League group stage, winning only one of their first five matches. This period was a turning point for Enrique and his squad. "I don't remember the exact moment," he said, "but when our results were disastrous and it felt unfair, I gave a talk to the players." He encouraged them to remain calm and assured them they were among Europe's best teams.

The French side's transformation has been remarkable since then, winning nine out of 11 games in the competition. Enrique attributed this success to consistent hard work and dedication during training sessions. "There's no one thing that explains this," he noted. "It's a day-by-day process." He emphasized that if he didn't see a change in mentality at each session, he would consider leaving.

PSG captain Marquinhos praised Enrique's gradual approach to improving the team since his arrival. The Brazilian defender acknowledged that changing the team's mentality took time and effort. "There were matches that unlocked confidence for us—Manchester City, Liverpool... those games confirmed our work," Marquinhos said. Last season, despite creating chances, PSG struggled with finishing; however, this year's results indicate progress.

Looking ahead to their first Champions League final since 2020, PSG will face Inter on 31 May in Munich. This match marks only the second European Cup/UEFA Champions League final between an Italian and a French team after Marseille-Milan 1-0, also held in Munich.

Enrique's focus on maintaining composure extends to interactions with referees as well. He avoids engaging with them during matches to prevent sending negative signals to his players. His philosophy emphasizes mental strength as crucial for success on the field.

This season has been significant for PSG supporters as they witness their team's resurgence under Enrique's leadership. The coach's emphasis on mentality has been pivotal in achieving their current success and reaching another Champions League final after several years.
